Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Originally published in England, this robust collection of 17 tales featuring ghosts is more noteworthy for the high quality of the writing than for its potential to shock. Sprinkled with British idioms and spellings, the stories introduce as many benevolent as ominous ghosts, and are not likely to frighten even the most timid readers. Most of the entries, including absorbing pieces by Eleanor Farjeon, Penelope Lively, George Mackay Brown and Philippa Pearce, have appeared in print previously. Among the collection's four original tales, two are standouts: the reflective "A Friend Forever" by the book's editor Hill ( Can It Be True? ; Go Away, Bad Dreams ) and John Gordon's "Grandmother's Footsteps." Gifted artist Barrett ( The Snow Queen ; Proud Knight, Fair Lady ) contributes shadowy illustrations that are occasionally Gorey-esque and always fittingly portentous. Ages 8-12.

Product Description
Illustrated in full color. "Who's that tapping at my window?" This classy collection and gorgeous gift volume of seventeen modern ghost stories is a refreshing antidote to all the gross and gory books presently on the market. Discriminating horror fans won't be able to put down these spooky tales written by contemporary American and British authors. The tales are devilishly diverse, ranging in mood from haunting humor to spine-tingling terror. Our original edition of The Random House Book of Ghost Stories quickly vanished, selling out of its first printing, but was never reprinted. Now, with the explosion of the horror/Halloween market, it seems the perfect time to resurrect Ghost Stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfyingly diverse collection with color illustrations., February 14, 2000
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Seventeen stories of ghosts present literary tales by such notables as Joan Aiken, Leon Garfield, Penelope Lively, Philippa Pearce and others: four of which have been written specially for this collection. Kids at the middle through high school grade levels will find them satisfyingly diverse presentations in this recommended ghost story collection complete with color illustrations peppered throughout by Angela Barrett.
