Book Description

January 7, 2004
What happened on October 31st, 1993 in Isla Vista, California? Random Lingering in Isla Vista explores the minds of college students attending the University of California Santa Barbara and the three square miles of dilapidated homes that they inhabit. Mike is a seventh year college senior thrust into the drug crazed college culture who must come to grips with the reality that he will soon be graduating. This novel is based on actual events that took place Halloween weekend in 1993, which was the place to be according to Playboy magazine. Local residents had had a long-standing hatred for the police and Isla Vista has never been the same since. City officials and local law enforcement were determined to crush the Halloween tradition and prepared for an all out riot that year. This novel caters to anyone who has ever set foot on a college campus and lived to tell about it. To live in Isla Vista is like no other place on earth and to party there is even more confusing. This book brings the experience of college to life and relates to those who have already graduated but can't figure out what to do next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Memory For An Author Notorious For Blackouts!!!, February 7, 2004

Yes it is true
I have been to rowdy college parties!!!!
It is true this is very Hunter Thompsonesque
Fear and Loathing on the Central Coast.
The writing style is kinda hard to comprehend at first
But, you get used to it
I liked the part how every house in IV has a name
The Boathouse
The Bob Marley House
The JunkYard
I had forgotten all about that...
I wonder how Mr. Knox's liver is doing these days?
Seems like he liked them pills
I 2 wish it had more on IV
Maybe for his sequel...

This book should be a must read for UCSB incoming freshman
This book should be on every former Isla Vistan's bookshelf
Even if it's just to show your friends someone actually wrote a book about living in Isla Vista!!
I hope this is the 1st of many from J.M. Knox...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read..., October 1, 2003

Having gone to school at UCSB and having lived in Isla Vista, I felt this book really summed it all up. Mike Knox recreates the madness, excitment and blissful confusion that one might encounter while living in Isla Vista. Writing in the style of a Hunter S., David Sedaris and E. Hemingway, he is the next great American Counter-Culture writer.
