Gorgeous pop melodies with electronic bleeps."
5 out of 5
- Alternative Press (pdf of review)

"A beautiful pop album that pays personal homage to the past but has one eye on the future."
- REMIX

"Mixing tons of sampling and bits of electronica with alternative rock in the vein of The Pixies and Morphine, Random Portraits comes out sounding like a sane man's Nine Inch Nails."
- American Songwriter

"A brilliant compilation of atmospheric samples that pays tribute to the past within the context of the present... An innovative piece, framing scrapbook memories of childhood into a musical re-emergence."
- The Tripwire

4.0 out of 5 stars Head Like A Movie, March 16, 2006

This CD is one of those underrated little gems that will borough it's way into your subconscious before you realize how much you really like it. For those unfamiliar, prime "Head" Dave Einmo is a veteran of fine Pacific NW bands Spyglass and Sushirobo. This "concept" album is inspired by Super 8 films shot by his parents in the 1970's. It's catchiness is almost a contradiction to the arty stance of the music, but it all works seamlessly without pretension. It's fun music any way you look at it, and I've been unable to get it out of my car since I got it. If you have the chance, see the band live. I saw them at Seattle's Crocodile Cafe last weekend and it was a brilliant show, deftly incorporating the old films as visual background to the songs. Eno would be proud. Here's hoping HLAK is more than a one-off project.

4.0 out of 5 stars It sounds pretty good so far..., March 20, 2006

I bought this yesterday, and listened to it once so far. A great college-sounding band, I definitely hear some Sonic Youth influence in there at times. Much better than Sonic Youth tho! Some songs are drums & guitar, and others are that and synth-like. Produced by the Modest Mouse guy.

Not much to go on I know....but I need to sit and listen to it further. All I can say, it sounds pretty good! I don't think you'd be wasting your money if you actually went out and bought it. :)
