Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This book may be the biggest bargain in crossword puzzles I've ever seen. No filler, just crosswords--and lots of them! Three hundred top quality, Sunday-sized puzzles by such constructors as Maura Jacobson, Stanley Newman, Tap Osborn, A. J. Santora, and Dorothea Shipp--all edited by former New York Times crossword editor Will Weng--should keep you busy. Even if you solve two puzzles a day, this collection should last you nearly five months! If the Sunday paper doesn't come often enough to suit you, get this book and lots of pencils.

4.0 out of 5 stars 300 Sunday Size Crossword Puzzles, September 18, 2010

This review is from: Random House Sunday MegaOmnibus, Volume 1 (Stanley Newman) (Paperback)
These are standard NYT Sunday crossword puzzles, and the major attraction is that there are so many of them. I'm good at crossword puzzles and so have no difficulty with the themes or most clues. Most presumably-obscure words will be familiar to anyone used to NYT Sunday puzzles from editor eras of Will Weng, Stanley Newman, Eugene Maleska. Any real difficulty lies only in the crossing of very obscure place names or personal names. Standard synonym clues are common. However, since finding truly hard puzzle compilations is next to impossible (once you have bought the few current NYT extra-hard books available), this omnibus is worth the money. You find old favorites like Frances Hanson and Louis Sabin, and the puzzles are entertaining enough to pass the time. The paper is cheap, and you have to tear out each puzzle yourself (no perforations), but neither bothers me. There are a few typos here and there, but actually, they just help to make solving a little harder when they occur. 300 puzzles is a lot, so no matter how fast you run through them, the book lasts a good while. None of the puzzles is irritatingly easy. They are just what you are used to getting from the New York Times in the past. I will buy another in this series, basically because I got what I expected: puzzles better than those from anybody other than the NYT.
