Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Sure, it's a great feeling of accomplishment to finish a crossword puzzle without help, but sometimes the clues are so abstruse that even the most brilliant polymath is left scratching her head in bewilderment. For those times, you'll want to keep Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary at your elbow. Now in its third edition and completely revised by Nancy Schuster, the former editor in chief of the Dell Champion crossword-puzzle books, this dictionary offers a plethora of facts from a broad spectrum of disciplines, from natural sciences and history to literature and the arts. One of the nicest features of this dictionary is the inclusion of new words and popular culture. For instance, along with finding all the books of the Old and New Testament, you can also find out who directed The Bicycle Thief (Vittorio De Sica), where Michael Jackson was born (Gary, Indiana), and who wrote Mildred Pierce (James M. Cain). Although created for those of us who love the challenge of a good crossword puzzle, Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary will also provide hours of browsing enjoyment for word lovers and trivia buffs, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super reference, January 25, 2001
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An exceptionally clear lay-out, informative and useful book. The print is easy to ready, and it's jam-packed with up-to-date information. Another bonus is that the hardcover version, with it's good quality paper and binding, is very durable (I've never used the softcover version, so I don't know about that one). It has more long words even than the New York Times crossword dictionary which, furthermore, fell apart much sooner despite being hard cover and with a similar price. With over 700,000 bits of information, it is quite simply an excellent reference manual for crossword junkies, I highly recommend it.

This is a very nice book, with good-size print and quality paper. Lots of entries, and very useful sections in the back for nobel prize winners, god and goddesses, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Correction to previous review, February 5, 2001

Oops! The book does have all that great info about gods/goddesses etc., but it's not at the back of the book. It's included as a regular alphabetical entry.
