I learned English as a third language and did not get to use it professionally until well into my 20s. There were gaps and errors in my knowledge of formal English, and they had been a hindrance throughout my career.

Looking back, I regret deeply for not studying a reference guide such as this one earlier. It covers the basic grammatical rules, lists the common spelling errors and even discusses the usage of all the important words and phrases. What benefits me the most, nonetheless, is the section on punctuation. I had never quite mastered the usage of colons and semicolons, but now I feel much more comfortable using them.

I purchased the ebook version for my Nook. The formatting looks fine on the small screen. The only constant annoyance is the page number, which corresponds to the paperback version instead of the electronic one. Overall, this is a great reference for anyone who had not gone through rigorous training on professional English writing.

I have found this small prescriptive grammar book to be an enjoyable and useful read. I take it with me to work, and school. I read, and reread it as a constant refresher on the rules of English grammar. This book is prescriptive in that it prescribes how to properly speak and write English. For many advanced students this book may across as too superficial; yet, for those students of the English language, like myself, who want rules and structure this book will be immensely helpful. The book is separated into two parts: rules and usage. The back of the book contains appendices on commonly misspelled words, and the meaning of numerous roots. The descriptive grammarian will hate it, the prescriptive grammarian will love it, and I'm sure Brian Gardner stands somewhere in between. The price is good, the paper quality and binding more than fair, and the content clear. I can recommend this book to all.

I teach high school level English. I'm tired of bulky textbooks that are too difficult for students to really use. I can provide the review sheets myself so I decided to purchase some easy to use handbooks for student reference. This is small and organized in such a way to make it simple to use. I can put them in table-top organizers around the room. I only regret that I could only locate 4 copies so far. I'll find more!

The inside of the book looks brand new, and even most of the cover looks new. But the spine of the book is covered in some kind of glue or plastic. This looks like a rejected product that was sold at full price. True the price at $6.60 wasn't much, but if I had seen the book prehand I wouldn't have paid more then $2 for it.

I am an editor. This book is a highly functional resource enabling quick and easy look up of common grammar rules/guidelines.

Its compact size makes it easy to tuck into a laptop bag and carry. And while the reading is rather dry, I also often take it along in my purse for quick reading to keep concepts fresh.

As a college student I was required to purchase this book and though it was a great concept of having a pocket sized grammar book versus a heavy textbook however I found it pretty annoying with the text and felt that there could of been more information/examples. Other thank that it was okay.

Haven't used it yet but presume that it will be a handy little resource to have when I need it. I'm a wordaholic and now I have to be an APA (American Psychological Association) FREAK about format. I'm sure it will be useful.
