5.0 out of 5 stars This thing is MASSiVE!, December 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a huge fan of benchmade knives. Great quality and superb steel, but it only has a blade. What if you need to open a beer, a can of tuna, bottle of wine, cut fire wood, fix something that broke? I do all those on a picnic date! Much less a week in the mountains.

First, i want to convince you SAKs arent just for kids. I carried a SAK as a boy scout (Eagle Scout) and have since associated them as being only for kids. I'm now a doctor in my late 20s, and have come to realize that these are great quality knives with superb steel. These knives are made with a steel that isn't 'premium' steel, but you wouldn't want them to be. I'm not going into detail about it, but the specific steel they use in the blade is 1.4110 x55CrMo14 56 HRC. This steel has enough carbon and heat treatment to stay razor sharp, and enough chromium to be near rust proof. It is easy to manufacture and if you lose it, unlike a $200 benchmade, you won't be too upset.

Once you've been sold on a SAK in general then you need to pick the right one for you. There are a lot of different assortments of knives with multiple tools. They all come with the large blade, can and bottle opener, corkscrew or philips head. My favorite additional tools from there are the scissors and saw. I cut 550 lb para cord with the scissors with ease. Check out the Huntsman and altimeter plus, they have everything I like.

Finally! Now the knife you've been wanting to read about. First off, this thing is MASSIVE! But don't take that to mean too heavy, at 5.6 oz I still take this backpacking. A 3.9 in blade & 4.2 in saw. I can do some serious work with this knife. Cutting baseball bat sized limbs is easy, and the size of this knife makes any chore possible.
Here are some minor good points:
1. Jimping on the back of the thumb hole so you can choke down on the blade for precise cutting, and extra grip if your doing some heavy cutting
2. The Swiss emblem is the button to release the locking blade, and your thumb is naturally on it so it is easy one hand open and close. This is a big advantage over traditional liner locks that require you to use your other hand or put your finger in the path of the closing blade. With this your thumb is safely to the side of the handle.
3. The rubber grips are a nice touch when your sawing, it is easier on your hands, and when they get sweaty you still have a firm grip
4. Probably for warranty reasons they dont advertise the bottle opener as a pry bar, .... But it is. They have a locking mechanism that when you press down on the bottle opener it slides slightly back into the knife and locks into position. It is also really thick and can take some abuse.
5.glass breaker? This is not listed and not recommended, but if your in a life or death situation in a car, none of that matters. But if you look at where the key ring is, the entire frame sticks out to a rounded point. Just like the glass breaker on other pocket knives, If you use it you will certainly lacerate your hand, and glass will get in your face. I would never recommend using any glass breaker for fun, or a test.

The only con I have about this knife is a lack of tweezers and toothpick. Being from an area with a plethora or cactus tweezers are a must have, but I'm currently working on boring a hole in the handle for the tweezers, easy fix.

In summary, SAKs are for adults, a must have when outdoors, and this one in particular is for serious jobs like cutting limbs for shelter/fire building. But doesnt break your pocket (weight nor expenses)

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough as it should be, February 23, 2011
This knife is as tough as it should be. I used the screw driver for prying and it held up without trouble. The scales are comfortable and grippy, and the yellow/black coloring makes it easy to find.
