More About the Author

John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting. After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years. John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series. He currently lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

I read a lot of books targeted at young teens because I want to be able to recommend great books to my kids. I'm always looking for fun and entertaining books that also happen to have main characters that demonstrate strong moral elements such as courage, loyalty, and intelligence. These books really deliver on the action and adventure while creating characters that you really care about. In one of the later books, I was surprised how attached I had become to Will's horse, Tug. This is an outstanding series that shouldn't be missed.

Even though Amazon advertises this as a Box Set, buyer beware - it is not. It's simply 8 books shipped to you loose. While I'm sure my 10 year old son won't mind, for $64, I would expect (and hope for) some sort of nice box packaging around this. Otherwise, it arrived quickly and in pretty decent condition. Amazon needs to learn to package their books better. We frequently receive books from them with bent corners or ripped dust jackets because the book has been shipped loose in a box and got banged around during shipping. One of the paperbacks in this set arrived with a bent cover.

I did not purchase the Ranger's Apprentice series through Amazon, so I can't speak to the books as a boxed set, but I can speak to the quality of the book series. I discovered this book series when I was 15 years old (about 8 years ago); I thoroughly enjoyed the series when it first came out and am still enjoying it today. Now, my entire family from my 8 year old sister to my father.

In short this book could be described as a "boys book", but any girl who loves a good action story will enjoy this series. Full of action, humor, and all around good people, this book is great for anyone. Solid writing, clean content, this book is one of the finest examples of juvenile literature I have seen in a long time.

My 12-year old son and I started reading these books together when he was 10. The books are so well-written that we purchased the set so that we could reread all of them.

Amazon corrected part of the description but it still says it is a gift set. These are just the 8 books priced together. They are not in a box or set. I bought them because it said "Boxed set" so now I have two Book # 1's.

My daughter loves the books, so obviously they are worth 5 stars.

I love reading YA books, especially those in a series. But by far this is my favorite. The characters are amazing but also relatable, and the situations they encounter are as modern as today's issues. Wholesome read for all ages. Thank you, John Flanagan.

Bought this series because it was high recommended by another parent. He told me that his son raves about this series. My son blew through the entire thing in a couple of months. He loved it.

This is a great series. Totally suggest that anyone who loves a good, well written adventure, that they should read these. It kept myself and my 11-year old niece intrigued from page one. We couldn't read them fast enough. And when we had to wait for the next one to become available - that was a lot of work.

Suggest that someone should read book 7 before book 5 as there is a time of a flash back!
