3.0 out of 5 stars Trilogy
# 3 of this series, I always find that the third book in a series is less interesting than the first or the second book.
This last book was like that.
Yes there was lots and lots of fighting of pirates, and it seemed to go on and on. There was not much more that could be added from the second book. No talk about faith in Jesus-Christ that would change a...

5.0 out of 5 stars Jane Austin Meets the Pirates!, July 22, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
What a wonderful conclusion Ransome's Quest was to an adventurous and delightful series! I enjoyed every moment I spent in this book and while each book was engaging, I found this one very difficult to put down for any length of time. The Ransome Trilogy is a grand blend of Pride and Prejudice and Pirates of the Caribbean! Captivating!

On the eve of their arrival to Julia's Jamaican home, their lives are disrupted once again when Charlotte is taken by the pirate Salvador. This starts a chain of events that drive William, Ned, Julia, and Charlotte each apart and scrambling to survive. All of them were well written and by the time I finished this series, I didn't want to leave the wonderful cast of characters! And the introduction of Salvador in Ransome's Quest was awesome. I fell in love with him! (Yes, I like the `slightly bad-boys'! :-P)

The intricate story plot that spans over the length of three novels was amazing! Just when I thought things would settle down, something unexpected would happen. I loved how Kaye kept surprising me! The best way to get the full effect of this amazing and complex plot that has a zillion twists and turns is to read them in order.

This might sound rather callous, but I really appreciate it when an author isn't afraid to bring pain or harm to her characters. It makes the story that much more realistic. And Kaye Dacus is one of those authors! (Go, Kaye!) The things Julia, James, and Charlotte go through at times made me cringe for them. But that kept it realistic--after all, pirates aren't very nice guys!

If you're thinking of reading this book, I recommend getting the whole trilogy and reading them in order. Everything that's been building up from Ransome's Honor and Ransome's Crossing comes to a heart-pounding conclusion in Ransome's Quest. Definitely a series you do NOT want to miss!

I reviewed this book for FIRST Wild Card Tour. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captured by Pirates!, August 30, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
September, 1814, Tierra Dulce Plantation, St. Catherine's Parish, Jamaica, is a day and place that Commodore William Ransome won't be forgetting. His only sister, Charlotte, has been captured by a pirate. While attending to his pursuit of his sister's captor, his wife, Julia, has been captured by yet another pirate, Shaw, known for his vicious treatment of his captives, and considered an enemy of the Royal Navy. Who does he go after first?

Captain Ned Cochrane volunteers to sail after Charlotte, freeing William to search for his wife. After a treacherous battle at sea, Ned reclaims Charlotte.

Shockingly, the pirate who held Charlotte is willing to help Ned and William find Julia. The question is whether this pirate can be trusted to help. What secrets do Ned and William not know about?

The world of piracy is dramatically portrayed in Ransome's Quest by Kay Dacus. The ruthlessness of Shaw is expressed in detail, becoming of such a bitter, ruthless, and hateful man. The dangerous battle scenes are accurate descriptions of high sea battles in the early 1800's.

The suspense, danger and ever-changing scenarios keep you riveted, and the budding romance and secrets pique your interest to the very end. The chivalrous behaviors are portrayed properly, reminiscent of days gone by. Definitely different from today's world!

You will find differing insights into the title of the book. A good play on words!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explosive end to an AMAZIING series!, August 29, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
This review is for the novel "Ransome's Quest". It is the third book in The Ransome Trilogy.

I have previously read and reviewed the first book, "Ransome's Honor" and the second book Ransome's Crossing.

I am excited to post the last review on this series because I now know what happens but sad at the same time because there are no more!

This trilogy is one of those series that you just do not want to put down. Once you start you have to find out what happens in the very end! Be prepared for some late nights once you pick up the first book :)

Kaye Dacus has managed to make pirates, Caribbean life and adventure come to life on the pages of these novels! Swashbuckling adventure at its best. This last book brings everything into an explosive satisfying conclusion! I applaud this series!

I could not be more pleased that I had the opportunity and pleasure to review these books. Please check out Kaye's website here... kayedacus.com

I have visited her website and am super excited to see how many more books of hers there are still left to read. She also has a novel in progress tracker on her site so you can see where she is at in the writing process for her newest novel! Very original and neat to see!

The heroism continues in this book, as both Ransome ladies are kidnapped by pirates. One pirate being more "kindhearted" than the other one. But both women are still in a somewhat perilous positions though as each kidnapping takes place.

Having first his sister kidnapped, William goes after her with a vengeance, determined to get her back immediately. This leaves, his wife, Julia alone on the sugar plantation with their workers, who William believes can be trusted.

It's not much longer after leaving her there in their protection that William gets the news that the blackest hearted pirate Shaw has taken his beloved Julia. With stories of Shaw's cruelty swirling through the Caribbean, William is heartsick at the thought.

Now he has the unthinkable position of having to decide who to pursue first... his little sister or his wife?

His previous First Lieutenant, Ned Cochrane steps up to the plate and offers to go after Charlotte himself which frees up William to go after Julia. Knowing for certain that Ned will do everything in his power to find Charlotte and bring her home swiftly.

With the Navy's assets at their disposal they both fly into action. Each of them going after their respective woman with steely determination and alot of prayers.

You will not believe the outcome of this novel. There is more action and suspense in this novel than in the whole series. Out of the three books this was my favorite! There are definitely shocking revelations in this book and it is a must read! You do not see them coming in the first two books.

Do not walk away without reading this whole series! Huge thumbs up to Kaye Dacus and I cannot wait to read more novels by her! Do yourself a favor and pick all three of them up!

Happy reading my friends!

Jenny

P.S. Let me know what you guys thought of these when you read them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic conclusion!, August 29, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
The third and final volume of the Ransome Trilogy is a delightful romp across the Caribbean that neatly wraps up the stories of William and Julia, and Ned and Charlotte, with some wonderful surprises thrown in. It is, predictably, the most fun if the reader is already familiar with the first two installments of the series, Ransome's Honor and Ransome's Crossing, and it provides an exciting, sometimes heartwrenching but completely satisfying conclusion to the overall story. It's a must-read if either of the previous volumes were enjoyed!

As I mentioned in previous reviews, I love the blend of Jane Austen (or Georgette Heyer, which was actually my first exposure to Regency romance) and Horatio Hornblower. The author's writing style is so very smooth, so very in keeping with the time, except for the very occasional slip into modern vernacular. Her love of research shines through with vivid and exact period detail. I could smell the salt breeze and feel the deck of the ship beneath my feet.

Thank you to Harvest House for allowing me to be an influencer for this series! I was in no way obligated to write a favorable review, but receiving the review copy of this third book was an unexpected delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not like the pirates from the movies!, August 23, 2011
By
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
This is first fiction novel that I have had the opportunity to review that was unique in that this one involved pirates. Not like Captain Jack Sparrow pirates, but more along the lines of the Will Turner possibility of a pirate.

Known by most as El Salvador, this pirate has captured Charlotte Ransome, the sister of Commodore William Ransome, whose goal is it to send a message that he can not ignore, that is unless the life of his daughter isn't worth the cost. Leaving her soon-to-be suitor Ned Cochrane, beaten on the porch while proposing to Charlotte, he vows to stop at nothing go bring Charlotte back.

Leaving his wife to go in search for his kidnapped sister, Commodore Ransome is pulled in two different directions when he learns that his wife Julia has been captured by another pirate, this one the notorious Captain Shaw. Will either woman be rescued or will William have to make a choice between his family or for the woman he loves with all his heart?

I received Ransome's Quest by Kaye Dacus compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and found this one most satisfying. This is the third book in the Ransome Trilogy. Unlike the comical adventures found in the Pirates of the Caribbean, this one deals with the unyielding black hearts and ruthless, cut-throat pirates from real history. This all ties together perfectly along with romance and faith that makes this high-seas adventures a must read and worthy of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad to see the Triology end, August 19, 2011
By
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
The other day I said "good-bye" to an old friend. At least that is what it felt like when I finished Ransome's Quest. It was a little daunting to know that I wouldn't read anymore about William, Julia, Charlotte, and Ned. They had become such good friends. As all things must come to an end, so they go by the wayside to pick up again and read later.

As with all of Kaye Dacus' books, I loved this one. This book had more excitement in it, but it had been a while since I had read the other two. There were more surprises and two, no three, kidnappings. A very exciting book!

Kaye did wonderful descriptions of Tierra Dulce and their way of life on the island. Everything was very real, especially Capt. Ned Cochranes lack of self-confidence. I thoroughly enjoyed Charlotte's impetuousness nature and her loyalty. I completely loved Charlotte.

This was another "can't put down book." Kaye has a way of weaving stories that make you feel good when you finish. Thanks Kaye, for this book, and for being my friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars RANSOME'S QUEST, August 18, 2011
By
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
RANSOME'S QUEST, the third installment in the Ransome Trilogy, was a great ending to the characters Kaye Dacus brought to life in RANSOME'S HONOR and RANSOME'S CROSSING.

Commodore William Ransome's life is once again in turmoil. Both his sister, Charlotte, and his wife, Julia have been kidnapped by pirates with vendettas against him. Captain Ned Cochrane's love for Charlotte is all that is needed for him to sail off to find her, freeing William up to search for Julia in the hands of the horrific pirate, Shaw. Family secrets are uncovered and mysteries revealed as the adventure of the Witheringtons and the Ransomes come to a close

I've loved this series. I am a real fan of pirate adventures. Not thinking anyone could compare with M.L. Tyndall's pirate series, I was pleasantly surprised that Kaye Dacus rose to the challenge. Though I knew from the start the mystery surrounding the pirate Captain El Salvador, it did not detract from my joy in reading this book. I true series of romance, adventure, and strong female characters that refuse to fit the stereotype of their day.

5.0 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better!, August 16, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
Ransome's Quest is the conclusion of the Ransome Trilogy and it was my absolute favorite of the three. Don't get me wrong; the first two books in the series were great, and if you enjoy romance on the high seas, you need to try them. But Ransome's Quest is the dessert at the end of the meal, the whipped topping on the pie, the cherry on the sundae. This is the way to end a series. SWEET!

There are pirates. There are kidnappings. There are hidden identities. There are dangerous agendas. And of course, romance. What's not to love about pirates and thundering naval battles, heroes to the rescue and damsels that don't necessarily need rescuing?

I absolutely loved one of the new characters in this story; El Salvador de los Esclavos. He deserves his own book because he came very close to stealing the limelight in Ransome's Quest. Isn't that just like a pirate?

And Kaye Dacus doesn't shy away from making the bad guys...BAD! I was rooting for some serious comeuppance...but if you want to know what happens, you'll have to read the book. I don't do spoilers!

Thank you, Kaye Dacus, for giving us a series of high seas adventure. It's a refreshing change in the lineup of overwhelming Amish fiction. I can't wait to see what you'll do next! (Hurry up, I'm waiting!:-)

Thank you, Harvest House Publishers, for providing me with a copy to preview. I was not required to give a positive opinion, but after reading it, I couldn't resist. If you like adventure fiction, stories about the high seas, and/or pirates, you have to give this series a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unbury This Treasure!, August 15, 2011

Carrie (Madera, US, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
Pirates. Parlay. A young woman disguised as a Royal Navy midshipmen. True love. Kidnapping. Mistaken identity. RANSOME'S QUEST has it all.

The third of The Ransome Trilogy, RANSOME'S QUEST also works as a stand-alone title. I had not read the previous two entries of the trilogy and I had no problem understanding what was going on and who the characters were. That's a difficult feat and Kaye Dacus did it marvelously.

Julia Ransome has returned home to her sugar plantation in Jamaica. Her sister-in-law Charlotte is with her. Julia is targeted by two different pirates, each with differing motives. Charlotte is also taken and both women have to summon reserves of faith and strength to return to their loved ones.

I enjoyed RANSOME'S QUEST very much. The writing is strong with language that evokes the time period. The characters are not caricatures of the typical head-strong woman. Charlotte does dash headlong into danger at great folly to herself and others but it isn't out of character given the other foolhardy actions she takes.

If you enjoy pirates, strong women, stronger men, and their love stories, RANSOME'S QUEST is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling conclusion!, August 14, 2011
This review is from: Ransome's Quest (The Ransome Trilogy) (Paperback)
Kaye Dacus is one of a handful of authors bringing me back to historical fiction. Her attention to detail and level of research makes you feel that you are there, and the sensibilities of her characters are so appropriate to the time period of British domination of the seas.

In RANSOME'S QUEST, we follow and conclude the adventures of William and Julia Witherington Ransome, as well as Ned Cochrane and Charlotte Ransome, William's sister. Romance, intrigue, and many surprises highlight this novel. With a major cliffhanger at the end of book 2, RANSOME'S CROSSING, Kaye keeps us guessing as she introduces us to not one, but two pirates plotting against the Witherington plantation and the Ransome name.

If you haven't read the first two in the RANSOME series, treat yourself to reading all three in succession. If you've been waiting, as I had, for RANSOME'S QUEST, get your copy now! You won't be able to put it down!
