Rapala Fishing Pliers, August 31, 2011
This review is from: Rapala Stainless Steel Pliers (Misc.)
I have used a pair of these pliers for the entire season, both in fresh and saltwater. They are a good size for use and come with a handy carrying case. They work well for many uses, including unhooking fish. They have a split ring tool at the tip. It is quite large. When I was replacing some hooks on my jigs for salmon fishing, the split ring tool was almost too big to fit in my split rings. And this was on some decent sized dart style jigs! I'll probably grind down the tips so that they more easily accept more standard sized split rings. After a week using these in the salt, there was a bit of rust on the pliers. They never said they wouldn't rust, and in fact, I figured that they would be best in fresh water. I cleaned them up, lubed them well, and they are still going strong.
The little plastic piece that acts like a spring to keep the pliers open is subject to fail without notice. In fact, the first pair I bought was broken in the package. I got them replaced, but my current pair failed too. This isn't a great issue as they open easily anyway, but it would be nice if they were more rugged. I'm glad to have these pliers on my boat as part of my tool arsenal. However, they manufacturer could do some better quality control AND adapt the split ring tool to smaller rings as this tool is obviously made for freshwater use (and smaller split ring sizes). It does have some good crimping functions as well as a wire/mono line cutter so it is quite handy.

Works well., August 18, 2010
Nice, functional tool. Does pretty much what one would expect it to do. Might be an isolated issue but the spring between the grips came off right away and has been doing it ever since.
