Book Description

This work addresses specific investigative and forensic processes related to sex crimes for those who work in law enforcement, the defense community, or in the private sector. It is an unprecedented collaborative work -- the first working manual for sex crime investigators, written by sex crime investigators and forensic scientists.

The key feature of this work is a thorough overview of the investigative and forensic processes related to sex crime investigation. It takes the reader through investigative and forensic processes in a logical sequence, showing how investigations of rape and sexual assault can and should be conducted from start to finish. It is intended to set the investigative and forensic standard for sex crimes investigation.

It is designed to be accessible, in terms of language, not only to a detective or investigator who does hands on casework, but to the student in the classroom learning about the subject for the first time.

This work is an excellent training manual for sex crime investigators around the world. It is also an excellent textbook for any hands on university course on the subject of sex crime investigation. This work is an excellent supplement for any investigative course involving violent crime or death investigation.

* The only comprehensive reference available on the investigation of sexual assault and rape, a crime 10 times more prevalent than murder

* Authored by qualified investigators and forensic professionals with more than twenty years of collective experience working cases, preparing them for court, and offering testimony

* Written in a clear, practical style, ideal for professionals in forensic nursing, law enforcement, the legal community, and the investigative community

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is easy to read and follows a logical progression from the initial call to the courts. Anyone involved in dealing with sexual assault cases in any capacity would benefit from having this book in their library of reference texts. This book would make an excellent training tool for police training agencies, nursing schools and emergency medical personnel." - www.crimeandclues.com

"Many of the methods for crime scene management may seem like common sense to experienced officers but the clarity and logic of these methods is an invaluable tool for both new recruits and seasoned officers. The methods for preserving and collecting evidence are clearly presented and logical in progression." - www.crimeandclues.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Very complete, useful and great attitude!, November 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rape Investigation Handbook (Hardcover)
I love it when someone that is very knowledgeable writes about the subject that represents their life's work. The authors of this handbook are so knowledgeable that you wish you could sit down with them and talk for hours. Since you can't do that, this is the next best thing. The Handbook is very, very complete. Checklists abound for all stages of sexual assault investigation, including excellent pre-trial preparation tips.

I also really enjoyed how the authors try to take us back in time to the origins of criminal investigations throughout the book, showing how solid, common sense investigations have cracked cases throughout the years. It gives proper context and also shows how you can't necessarily expect DNA to solve every case. I also thought it was very valuable that the authors included information about false allegations. This topic, although unpopular and not well understood, deserves more attention.

This is a book I am extremely glad to have on my reference shelf. Although it is directly written for the police sexual assault investigator, it will be useful for anyone working in the field.

You'll also find useful the many real-life cases that the authors have included. The cases are used well to illuminate the discussion and overall you don't get a feeling that they are only included for shock value.

This book is very good, for information on proper conducts when dealing with a sexual assault. It also has extensive information of false reports. Savino is an expert in sex crimes. Definitely worth reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Acquaintance vs. Stranger rape, May 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rape Investigation Handbook (Hardcover)
This book was very accessible to read and was full of information, just as other reviewers have stated. I definitely appreciated the false reports section because so little information is out there concerning this subject. The only reason I rate this book at four stars as opposed to five is that (and I didn't take the time to count the cases they present as examples or the pages spent on one vs. the other) it felt that there was an emphasis on stranger rape cases and physically violent rape cases rather than acquaintance rape cases, which tend to be less physically violent (with the exception of marital/intimate partner rape). This focus seemed odd to me because there are proportionally many more acquaintance sexual assaults than stranger sexual assaults and most sexual assaults are not extremely physically violent. Otherwise, I enjoyed everything about this book cover to cover.
