Book Description

February 1, 2009

The kayak trip was supposed to be a honeymoon. But when Nell and Joe Stevens are caught in a flash flood, Nell is swept under, trapped and loses consciousness. When she awakes, safe on shore, she finds a note from Joe, explaining that he has gone for help. He never returns.

The search that follows raises more questions than it answers. About the family he never mentioned, who arrive in Nell's sleepy hometown. The enormous inheritance. And worse, the question whispered by the locals: is Nell responsible?

Always hoping for Joe's return, Nell tries to put the rumors behind her. But as years slip past, Nell craves answers. She takes to the river again in search of the truth and finds that jealousy, desperation and deception can pull you under faster than churning water--and you may never resurface.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Hunter stand-alone thriller, November 4, 2010

This review is from: Rapid Descent (Mass Market Paperback)
I would not have thought I would be that interested in a book that focuses so much on kayaking and whitewater sports but Hunter does her research so well that I felt like I needed a crash helmet and personal flotation device on during some of the scenes in this book - they were that vivid. If you like kayaking at all, you are going to LOVE this book. I thought Hunter did a great job not only with the descriptive portions of the book but I felt she rounded out each character and gave each one in the book a very vivid face and voice. I really liked Nell, the female protaganist. I liked Paw Paw, her bootlegging grandfather, and JJ, her precocious 6 year old son, too. And I liked that the romance in the book was hinted at but not consummated. I believe it can be a romantic novel without sex scenes on every other page. The chase can be a good portion of the fun.

I have read Gwen Hunter for years, even when it was difficult getting her books in the U.S. and I had to order them from the U.K. Her Delande series scared American publishers, I think. It is disturbing - even in this day and age. It deals with difficult subjects - child abuse and incest. And even now I don't think the series is widely available. Her next series about Dr. Rhea Lynch also has some disturbing characters and aspects. But ALL of her books - and I've read most of them - are well researched and exceptionally well written. I have just ordered the four that I realize that I haven't read to date including the two she wrote with her husband under the name of Gary Hunter. I will let you know what I think of them once I finish them.

If you liked this action thriller, you will most assuredly like Hunter's Shadow Valley. I think as a contemporary romance thriller writer, Hunter is as good as if not better than Heather Graham, Carla Neggers, Sharon Sala, Lisa Jackson or Linda Howard, just to name a few.

1.0 out of 5 stars Was gonna buy the book, but whats the point , Harriet spoiled it all again., January 10, 2011

Harriet!

Not everyone appreciates your comments of your books, they are to long and basicaly tell the whole book, in a few pages you ALWAYS write,, so please quit, we do not appreciate it, It spoils the book for the rest of us, just because you read 2 books a day, (that is 14 books) in a week, we can always count on 14 books being spoiled by you.

I just started reading gwen Hunter books and she is a great writer. I couldn't put this book down. It was more like reading someones true story, what Nell went through for all those years and trying to raise a child in the meantime. To read this book, send the whole family away for the weekend because I guarantee, nothing will come between you and this wonderful book.
