I would not have thought I would be that interested in a book that focuses so much on kayaking and whitewater sports but Hunter does her research so well that I felt like I needed a crash helmet and personal flotation device on during some of the scenes in this book - they were that vivid. If you like kayaking at all, you are going to LOVE this book. I thought Hunter did a great job not only with the descriptive portions of the book but I felt she rounded out each character and gave each one in the book a very vivid face and voice. I really liked Nell, the female protaganist. I liked Paw Paw, her bootlegging grandfather, and JJ, her precocious 6 year old son, too. And I liked that the romance in the book was hinted at but not consummated. I believe it can be a romantic novel without sex scenes on every other page. The chase can be a good portion of the fun.
I have read Gwen Hunter for years, even when it was difficult getting her books in the U.S. and I had to order them from the U.K. Her Delande series scared American publishers, I think. It is disturbing - even in this day and age. It deals with difficult subjects - child abuse and incest. And even now I don't think the series is widely available. Her next series about Dr. Rhea Lynch also has some disturbing characters and aspects. But ALL of her books - and I've read most of them - are well researched and exceptionally well written. I have just ordered the four that I realize that I haven't read to date including the two she wrote with her husband under the name of Gary Hunter. I will let you know what I think of them once I finish them. If you liked this action thriller, you will most assuredly like Hunter's Shadow Valley. I think as a contemporary romance thriller writer, Hunter is as good as if not better than Heather Graham, Carla Neggers, Sharon Sala, Lisa Jackson or Linda Howard, just to name a few.

This review is from: Rapid Descent (Kindle Edition)
Harriet!
Not everyone appreciates your comments of your books, they are to long and basicaly tell the whole book, in a few pages you ALWAYS write,, so please quit, we do not appreciate it, It spoils the book for the rest of us, just because you read 2 books a day, (that is 14 books) in a week, we can always count on 14 books being spoiled by you.

I just started reading gwen Hunter books and she is a great writer. I couldn't put this book down. It was more like reading someones true story, what Nell went through for all those years and trying to raise a child in the meantime. To read this book, send the whole family away for the weekend because I guarantee, nothing will come between you and this wonderful book.

Gwen is my cousin and I LOVE all of her books! Her attention to the subject matter is is beyond compare. In every book, she makes you feel as if you are right there - in the south, in the medical field, in the rapids. And what a thriller this one is. Kept me right on the edge. Could not put this one down. Way to go cuz!!

Very technical,

Was just too technical for me and I wanted to see more interaction between the two main characters.... kind of disappointing

trong police procedural,
This review is from: Rapid Descent (Mass Market Paperback)
On their second honeymoon, Joe and Nell Stevens went whitewater rafting. A nasty accident left her with a concussion and injuries from head to toe. Joe simply vanished. She got help, but in spite of a major search they never found Joe. The lead police detective Nolan Lennox believes the widow got away with murder.
Seven years later, Nolan persuades his son Orson, also a cop, to investigate. His gut totally differ from his dad's belief as he feels Nell is innocent watching her raise her son with love and run the rafting business she and Joe opened up together. When Joe's corpse is found, his family makes noise that his black widow killed their son; her motive being his money. Even Orson begins to have doubts whether Nell is innocent. RAPID DESCENT is a strong police procedural with a hint of romance between the lead cop and the prime suspect that is kept simmering for the most part, which augments the inquiry into whether she killed her spouse or not. The cast is strong especially the lead pair and their extended families who believe she is a cold blooded killer while the story line is faster than the whitewater rapids as Gwen Hunter provides no respite from her superb thrilling story line.
