5.0 out of 5 stars Good for fat old bags too
I have been stalled on normal low carb for 2 years. Being what most of you would call OLD (over 60) my metabolism would make a turtle seem lightning fast. So I bought Lyle's book. I liked it because it is written for people to understand easily (even trolls), is easy to follow and makes sense with the science. I have been doing the diet now for about 3-4 weeks and have...

1.0 out of 5 stars SCIENTIFIC NOT!
Imagine spending $25 plus shipping to read about the oldest diet in the world: Atkins with lower calories! What a breakthrough! Despite the fact that McDonald's protein cycling, CKD, PSMF or whatever else you would like to call his "theories" have garnered a following, not one scientific study proves it works at all. There is no study, not one, to show you can low carb...

I have been doing the diet now for about 3-4 weeks and have finally broken my stall and lost about 6 pounds. I can see this as an approach to maintenance as well as one can dip into this diet for a few days as needed and it is easy to tweak for individual needs. You may not agree with everything Lyle says, but hey, it works. Can't argue with that.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, July 21, 2005
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
Controversial in some forums for his "no nonsense" approach (read: founded in science, not hype) to dieting, Lyle McDonald has written an easy to read and unique diet book. This is NOT "atkins with less calories," but instead a diet based on essential nutrition and when used correctly, lets the dieter drop weight and (more importantly) fat at the fastest possible rate without muscle loss. Most "crash diets" have the biggest problems with lacking necessary nutrients and "rebounding" (gaining the fat back), but this is why the Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF) is best. It requires the essential fats, protein, minerals, and vitamins for health and includes tactics on completing the diet without gaining back the fat. This is my favourite diet book and has been my favourite way to lose fat without sacrificing muscle.

5.0 out of 5 stars No BS here, July 22, 2005
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
If you want a book that babies you through pages of recipes and self-affirmation, you had best look elsewhere. If you want a book that gives you information in plain, no-nonsense terms without being bogged down with drivel, this is for you.

In his characteristic pull-no-punches style, Lyle outlines a quick, fast and very simple PSMF- a protein-sparing modified fast. Don't get this confused with Atkins or the Zone or anything trendy. The idea has been around for a long time; Lyle's book pulls it all together in a comprehensible and comprehensive plan.

The book provides for all ranges of fitness and athletic ability, whether obese or fitness-competitor level. It outlines what to eat, what supplements may or may not be useful, and how to structure workouts on this particular diet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for me!, July 22, 2005
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
The author is a little arrogant at times but I like the way it doesn't fill endless pages with nonsense you probably already know anyway. Eh, he doesn't bother documenting his studies, how many people actually look them up anyway?

I've got a pretty lame metabolism and regular low-carb diets don't work for me, I had to get a little more extreme. However, the balance between "free meals" and the extreme dieting makes it doable for me, but I gave up on trying to do re-feeds early on when they made me ill.

I'm not a body builder or a rabid exerciser, just another middle-aged woman fighting the advancing flab.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook, January 2, 2006
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
I am so glad that I purchased "The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook". After years of wishing to be able to see my abs this book helped me to make it a reality. At 38 yrs old and having had children, I was afraid it would not be a possibility for me. This diet works and is very easy to follow. There is so much enlightening information about nutrition, metabolic slowdown, and how to use free meals, and refeeds, to ensure success on the diet. There is also a wonderful recipe section with delicious meals that fit the diet. I am a very happy customer and highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, March 22, 2006
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
While the diet itself is nothing new, his approach and science knowledge explaining it are. If you are looking for a glamorous, polished glossy covered book, this isn't for you. If you are looking for good information to lose fat fast it is. The chapters on what to do "after the diet is over" are very detailed, unlike most books which leave you on your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Frills, All Results, April 25, 2006
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
The title tells it all. If you want to lose fat quickly, then Lyle McDonald will tell you how. And, perhaps more importantly, how to do it in a manner that minimizes muscle loss and maximizes the amount of fat that stays off once you end the diet.

The text is clear, succinct, and at times even witty. You'll know, step-by-step, exactly what you have to do, and exactly why you're doing it.

Be forewarned: the diet isn't for the faint of heart. But weightloss is never fun; it's hard work, and generally unpleasant. But it works. The results are, frankly, stunning, and the week-by-week (and often day-by-day) changes you'll see in the mirror make the difficulty worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another success story., July 22, 2005
This review is from: The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook: A Scientific Approach to Crash Dieting (Spiral-bound)
I needed to lose a bunch of fat for an upcoming beach vacation. Using Lyle's approach allowed me to do so safely and rapidly, vaporizing the flab while protecting and exposing the hard earned muscle I've spent a life time building. If you want to quit messing around and for once and all finally get lean, quit procrastinating and buy this book now.

Hey Mark, I'm sure by now you've had plenty of offers to send you the gun you requested. Before you pull the trigger, can I have your copy? Thanks.
