2.0 out of 5 stars Boring
I found this book extremely difficult to follow, and less than interesting to put it as politely as possible.
Instructional design is an interesting topic, coming up with ideas that meet the learning needs of my students is always a challenge I enjoy. I wanted to add some structure to what I do so I bought this book. Mistake!

A must have for all instructional designers and trainers. An extremely well written book and a very enjoyable read--- it puts the book "The Systematic Design of Instruction" to shame...which by the way is a "definite sleeper"! If you want current information about instructional design, with step by step directions, with clear and concise professional opinion, this book is definitely for you! I highly recommend this book to all design associates.

I teach Instructional Design, and most of my Grad students don't have a clue what it is. They do not realize that Instructional Design is a Process not a Product. Piskurich's book is a no-nonesense walk through all the steps in the process. Each step is explained in clear, unambiguous language, and is easy to follow. This book can make anyone into an Instructional Designer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good resource to add to your ID library, August 19, 2001

While certainly not the "definitive" book on the art and science of instructional systems design, this text contains lots of tips and tools to help you as you design your instructional project. Warning: Because books are often published months or years after they were researched and written, and as with any text that contains hyperlinks, you will find some of the links are no longer active.

For instructional designers at all levels of experience and in all settings, this book gives insight and practical applications for the systematic design of instruction. It is also excellent for sharing with clients, colleagues, and professional who have limited or no familiartity with Instructional Systems Design (ISD). The layout and content simplifies the perceived complexity of ISD models and provides straightforward concepts and practices. A must for the professional developer's library!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to develop instructional material, March 15, 2007
By
This book has more than some instructors will need, but I think all of it has potential for being very useful. For example, I am using part of it to help me improve the layout of a book, another part to help me teach trainers how to write better instructional objectives, and the rest to refresh my learning in every area.

There is still the matter of teaching in an effective way, and this book was not developed for that purpose. But having a well organized block of instruction in which each part has a purpose, and having good printed material and plenty of participant interaction, will make teaching easier. This book provides all of that in abundance. I believe it should be a standard reference for committed trainers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Instructional designers, August 22, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An an instructional designer, I know how difficult it can be to find good written resources on the subject, and it is next to impossible to find resources that don't waste too much time on ID history and theory.

I wanted a practical resource, and that is exactly what this book is. It explains ID procedure in great detail and stays away from uneccessary theoretical mumbo jumbo. My only criticism is that it can get wordy and repetitive at times.
This is not a book for ID students, it's a book for actual instructional designers. I learned more from this book than any other book on ID.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Resource, July 31, 2008
I found this book to be an absolutely fantastic resource for anyone who already does, or who is interested in doing, instructional design.

Many books go into instructional design theory. This book actually does what a well-designed course should do - it's a relevant guide for someone who wants to know how to apply good instructional design NOW. Theory has value, but theory doesn't provide you with clear and concise steps on how to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate a course. This book goes through that process - in that exact order.

I've been doing e-learning design and classroom facilitating for a while now, and it was comforting to see things I've discovered through my own experience confirmed by what I read in this book. What's more important, I found great tips, tricks, and solutions that I will apply immediately in my course designs.

I found this book extremely difficult to follow, and less than interesting to put it as politely as possible.
Instructional design is an interesting topic, coming up with ideas that meet the learning needs of my students is always a challenge I enjoy. I wanted to add some structure to what I do so I bought this book. Mistake!

The ideas presented in this book are by no means ground-breaking or new, and are actually often common-sense to educators/trainers with more than a few years of experience like myself. Not only does the author go into excessive detail with multiple useless charts and checklists, but his thoughts are not organised, which makes the book extremely hard to follow. It is like he just scribbled down ideas as they came to him.

I feel sorry for any prospective Instructional Designers who might be stuck with this as a text book. That is enough to put anyone off ID as a career!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very down to earth..., July 6, 2007
I bough this text for a graduate course that I am taking. I really like how the author is down to earth and speaks on an understandable level. He also explains items very clearly.
