4.0 out of 5 stars Title Somewhat Deceptive, October 19, 2001
This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)
I am a long retired teacher and supervisor of mathematics. In addition to having taught math for many years, I have also written and published materials covering the same subject. I am now using this book with an eight year-old math whiz and find it valuable to introduce him to rapid calculation and then an analysis of why it works (largely based on our place-value system of numbers. The various methods are interesting but most of them are not very practical for everyday calculation since most are special cases rather than general applications. For successful use they also require instant recall of the basic number facts and there is no hint as to how this can be accomplished. Barring that prior requirement not many math phobes will become highly skilled arithmeticians in 30 days using this or any other book.

5.0 out of 5 stars new ways to think about math, November 30, 2005

This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)
I read this book about once a year. It turns arithmatic inside-out, showing quick tricks to do calculations in your head, or ways to transpose number problems to view them in new ways that make them easier to solve. For example, using the power of reciprocals, multiplying by 5 is equivalent to dividing by 2 and moving the decimal point to the right spot through a test of reasonableness. I apply many of the tips in this book regulaly in my job during the day, and the more times I review the book the more they've become intuitive. I highly recommend for anyone interested in math or numbers, or deals regularly with simple math problems.

This book has some very cool tricks. It really helps out a lot on tests. It is fun to show my dad them (he is really interested in math). In math class we are reading this book and doing the problems. I don't see how Mr. Julius figured out these tricks. You should get this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Entertaining Book for Anyone who Wants to Make Quick Calculations - Without a Calculator !!, August 1, 2006
This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)

In an easy to read and entertaining way the author shows you tricks and shortcuts that will enable you to perform quick arithmetic calculations. Following the book you will learn two tricks or methods, each one illustrated with step-by-step explanations. There are about 2000 exercises that will help you master arithmetic.

Through easy and fun techniques you will be able to perform seemingly difficult problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, maybe even faster than if you were to enter the number in a calculator.

Once you start reading this book, you will be hooked with it, and with your recent ability to make fast simple calculations. But lets keep it real, this is just a collection of tricks and shortcuts for arithmetic operations (+, -, x, /) you won't become an expert mathematician, but you will enjoy math a lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some neat tricks, May 29, 2008
This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)
I love this book! Well... At least parts of it. But those parts are enough to give it a five star rating. You will learn quite a few tricks that will speed up you head calculations enormously. However, they only applies to certain calculations, so while you sometimes will impress your friends and colleagues, you will still find problems that takes as long as before.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ANYONES PERSONAL LIBRARY, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)
This book was just absolutely BRILLIANT. What I LOVED about it was not just the core collection of, as advertised, Math Tips & Tricks...(that type of erudition gets 4 stars alone); but what set this book above all the rest was in its presentation. The curriculum styled chapters, the progression of the concepts, and the perfect balance of challenge and fun carefully placed from cover to cover is what truly sets this particular book above the others. I really enjoyed the quirky, yet intelligent tone of the writing as well as the pace throughout. It's one thing learning tricks of a trade but the TRUE skill is being able to explain HOW and more importantly WHY they all work in such simple, easy to understand terms. These combined with everything else I don't need to bore you with makes for a great package worth much more than what's payed. Who says you can't be informative AND entertaining? This book accomplishes these things without being childish or patronizing. Regardless I feel that this particular book is a nonchalant, too the point, EXPERIENCE driven work intended to be shared rather than for a quick buck. Basically, RAPID MATH TRICKS & TIPS is a miniature math course that packs a punch. It's worth your buck and makes a great edition to your library BUT MOREOVER TO YOUR MIND. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4.0 out of 5 stars Go green and save your calculator electricity, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Rapid Math Tricks & Tips: 30 Days to Number Power (Paperback)
If you master this book, you will realize that these are not tricks. You use this logic all the time but never realize you are doing it. Using this book, you verify what you are doing and maybe we can teach an old... O.K. I mean it is possible to pick u some new skills. There are examples, drills and most important though processes.

The only drawback to this book is that with the advent of cheap prolific calculators, there is no need for archaic fractions in our dismal oriented world.

This may not be the be-all-end-all on the subject but I found it helpful from the grocery store to the IRS.

Not the book of fun tricks I was told it was, I told a friend about this great book full of tips and tricks and fun number games I had seen in a classroom. I was told this was it (right down to the author),it was not.
it has some tricks, but nothing to make a kid want to learn more.
Oh well, someday I will find what I was looking for
