5.0 out of 5 stars an engineer's marvel and fun to play with, April 9, 2007

It's a remarkable little toy, one which is not only fun to play with, but just fun to marvel at how the designers managed to duplicate the real-life mechanisms in a level-action rifle and the box magazine. This is not "pump action" as the forestock does not move; all the compressive force required to launch the dart comes from the lever action (forward pull compresses the spring). The designers faced a compromise, more power would have required a harder pull, which might make it difficult for kids less than 8-9. An easier pull would limit its range, which is decent but not outstanding. As it is, the action requires sufficient force that the designers wisely made the lever out of metal, not plastic. Loading the cartridges one by one against the spring tension into the box magazine, sliding it into the receiver, cycling the action and having the empty shell forcefully eject, followed by the smooth loading of the new cartridge, is all quite satisfying. In a pinch you can be shooting like John Wayne in Rio Bravo.

It rivals the 6-shot maverick for fun-factor (they also use the same type of darts), and the only caveat I can offer is that smaller kids younger than 8 or 9 might find the lever action hard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Dart Rifle, February 19, 2008
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rapid Fire Western Rifle w/ 6 darts & 6 shells (Toy)
This is by far the best dart gun ever. Here is why, with nerf products you don't get any realism. They are great for just shooting and that is it and usually if you want realism then you have to spend 200+ dollar on a pellet gun and then buy the Co2 tanks. You can buy a cap gun for around 50$ and get realism but you lose out on shooting factor. This gives you both a realistic weapon and the ability to shoot it instead of just making noise or having to pay out your jag hole for the weapon and it's needed extras.

The pros:
A fun dart gun
Good design
Real world gun design and firing
Good distance (with good darts)

The cons:
If you aren't carful you can either loose the darts or the shells that holds the darts

It can get jammed (but not a real serious problem usually you just have to take out the clip and fix it no big deal)

It has bad distance
(based on if you have a bad dart. I found this out one day when firing off my clip. 5 of my six darts went a good 15 feet then the last dart would only go 1 foot or less. It was actually the dart itself because I switched shells and got the same result. This can be easily fixed if you buy the dart refill pack, as long as the whole refill pack isn't filled with bad darts)

It can break due to the fact that when it was made they made the spring air mechanisim out of plastic. In other words if you cock the weapon and leave it cocked too long or cock it and drop it on the floor the strong metal spring will shatter the plastic part.
The upside to this is if this does happen you can email the buzzbee toy company and get a replacement part for free. It is also easy to fix. Just open it up take out the broken part and add the new one. Then just screw it back together and it is as good as new.

The gun would have been a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for that little issue. Maybe in the future the buzzbee people will figure out to make it out of a better plastic or make it out of metal

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm gonna plagarize and call this an engineering wonder!, January 19, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rapid Fire Western Rifle w/ 6 darts & 6 shells (Toy)
Call me a Nerf addict, I've officially started on my mission to own every Nerf type gun available (spouse permitting or not!) and this one's been on my list for a long time. In fact, I liked the reviews so much I got two of them!

Here are my comments:

1) Power: High, travels far and hurts a lot! Springloaded air pushers are typically the worst in power, but this baby must have a very strong spring. The pull is definitely hard enough, though an 8 year old can handle it once he knows how to use his leverage.

2) Accuracy: This all comes down to the dart. You must ensure that the dart is straight, and not an old bent one. The dart has to travel down a barrel and if the dart is bent, it'll rub against the barrel on the way out. If you have a new straight dart, it is very accurate and travels far.

3) Fun factor: OMG, is this thing is so much fun! It is an engineering marvel. When you pull back the lever under the gun it ejects the spent cartridge from the barrel and loads the new dart/shell in one motion. You feel like a real 19th century rifleman with this gun, especially with the bulky looking shells. This gun is such a favorite that we're carrying this around the house pretending like we're a frontier family and putting it next to our beds at night. 10 out of 10.

4) Jamming: As always, most Nerf type guns can jam and this one does jam, but it's a learning process. You must learn to pull the level in one fluid motion so that the old shell is ejected crisply, and the ammo clip must be carefully loaded. When we first got the gun we jammed it a couple of times and ripped the darts, but after the first few times, we learned to pull the lever in one fluid motion and happily haven't ripped any darts since up to today.

5) Speed: For a 6 shooter of course this gun isn't as quick as something like the Maverick or the Tek 6, but the fun factor more than makes up for it. You speed up through experience and I'm now a lot faster than when I first got it.
We got the spare ammo refill clip so that we always have an extra 6 shots ready, but it's not the easily thing to remove the spent one and insert the new one. It's easier with experience and I'm thinking about lubing the inside on the gun but I don't want to get grease everywhere.

6) Function: When the shells are ejected they fly all over the place so this is an indoor gun and best fired from a single position. In a set piece fight, this gun is great for it's accuracy and power.

Summary: Overall, this is probably one of the most fun Nerf style guns you can get. If it's only for Nerf wars, you might consider getting something else. But if you're any kind of Nerf aficionado you simply must get this gun, that's a MUST!
