5.0 out of 5 stars The only book of its kind, typology taking up post Oakeshott, August 16, 1997

This review is from: The Rapier & Small-Sword: 1460-1820 (Hardcover)
Norman sets the standards for classifying every rapier and shortsword hilt and component (guards, inner guards, pommels and the like) sufficiently to allow any student of the sword of the period covered to identify and date any blade one is likely to come across. The book is also essential for re-creators and swordsmiths looking to turn out accurate period pieces and use them in a proper manner of combat. It SHOULD be returned to print immediately

Long out of print and difficult to find, yet worth every penny. A.V.B. Norman's exhaustive work is THE book for understanding the origins, development, and evolution of of rapiers and small-swords. With a classification of 113 types of rapier and small-sword hilts, the book gives you a drawing-by-drawing layout of how these hilts evolved from a simple cruciform hilt wielded with a gauntlet-armored hand to an elaborate shell designed to protect the un-armored hand. Based primarily on original paintings depicting swords worn in period as well as many surviving extant swords.
