Editorial Reviews

Rappalachia takes bluegrass and hip-hop into several new directions, anchored by Rench's trademark thumping beats and twangy instrumentation. Bluegrass pickers Todd Livingston, Jason Cade, and Ellery Marshall lend their chops to complement a host of emcees across 15 tracks that include appearances by Dead Prez, Kool Keith,T.O.N.E-z, Nitty Scott MC, David E Beats, R-SON, Dolio The Sleuth, Brooklyn35 Collective, Aint No Love, plus bluegrass singing from Brandi Hart and Jen Larson. Gangstagrass once again expands the boundaries of American music and pioneers new territory that shows how seamlessly the block rocking beats and the barn burning twang can flow together.

The mark of great art is that it makes you think. It makes you step outside of what you normally view as your "zone" and forces you to re-examine that. This goes for all forms of art whether it's paintings, literature, film, music or whatever. True examples of artistic achievement in music seems to be few and far between these days, although admittedly that may depend on where you look. If you only look where you're used to looking, then perhaps you won't see all that you could. Experience all you could.

We have an idea in our head that we've allowed to work its way in that says "this is what I like. I don't like that, and nothing can really shake me of that". And when you do that you are inhibiting yourself. You are limiting the enjoyment that you can get, the wonderment that you can experience.

Gangstagrass is a shining example of that. Something that on it's face many people would reject it out of hand and dismiss it as something they can't get with. And that's a sad thing because it's really good.

In a recent Interview Rench, the founder of Gangstagrass, mentioned that when you say "this is Bluegrass combined with Hip Hop", that many people will simply say they don't like that. But if you let them hear it, then often you have people that are digging it and really grow to love it.

And I'm sure many people felt that way when they first heard the theme song that Gangstagrass did for FX's "Justified", for which they were nominated for an Emmy Award, called "Long Hard Times To Come".

When I was younger I felt like I could never enjoy country music. And then I heard some Johnny Cash and loved it, I heard some Christian Kane music and loved it, and the same went for when I first heard the theme music to Justified.

First you think "country". Then you realize it's something more than that. It's deeper than country ... older, more raw. It's bluesy. But it still got that southern twang. Yeah, it's bluegrass and Hip Hop. It's innovative. It's dope. And best of all, it don't got some air raid siren poppin' off every two seconds. This ain't what you're expecting, but it might just be exactly what we need right now. It's time for Hip Hop music to move in new directions. This is how we get there.

Gangstagrass has made me believe in the creativity of music again. What I love about this group is not just a core of nice, talented performers making their way in the music business, but they are remaking listener's preconceived notions of what music can be. Led by Rench, Gangstagrass deftly blends America's musical darling of "folk" with America's bad boy of "rap". The album starts off with pure joy with "Gunslinging Rambler"- complete with yodeling. There's a plethora of guest artists to enjoy. I always enjoy hearing Brandi Hart collaborate with the group. I feel like their first album was such a breath of fresh air that the second album doesn't hit you with the same shock of wind. However, Rappalachia firmly plants Gangstagrass as a group to be reckoned with in the years to come.

This album is really good from start to finish. Rench and the gang put a solid beats and music. Different people rap on each song. I love it

You won't be disappointed. I'm as excited about these guys as I was at the beginning of Rap, which I've avoided for years now. It got superficial very quickly. There's some real depth here, I'm sure there are layers that will intrigue me for years.

Purchased it because of the theme song off of "Justified". The cd is good, I enjoy listening to it, but for me it is not a cd you listen to over and over again. After a couple of times the songs all sound too similar.

I first heard this group's music on the TV show Justified. It was a really catchy song, so I searched around and found Gangstgrass music and ordered it. It is an interesting combination of bluegrass music and rap. Even though I usually listen to oldies music & Country Western, I find This quite enjoyable to listen to and particularly like the beat.
