Book Description

January 2000
Traditional culture is relevant to both the present and the future. This book provides an insight into the development of fashion, design and culture during the reign of the Choson Dynasty (1392-1910) in Korea. The traditional Korean wrapping cloths stand as a particular testimony to the creative talents of unknown Korean women. Each design is unique and of its time, yet many of the wrapping cloths also bring to mind images of modern abstract art. It is through their design that these objects can communicate with people from other cultures across time. This book should provide a greater understanding of Korean culture and art. Illustrated throughout in colour, it features traditional costumes and textile samples. It also explores the design of both the featured textiles and the costumes they were used to make. Many of the costumes featured are viewed from a range of angles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautiful creations, June 29, 2000

This review is from: Rapt in Colour: Korean Textiles and Costumes of the Chosen Dynasty (Paperback)
Poring over the illustrations of Korean costumes and wrapping cloths from the Choson dynasty was a pleasure for me. The photographs beautifully captured not only the colours and forms of the creations, but the sheen and texture of the materials. I liked the design of the layout and the typeography. Before the collection of illustrations there are brief essays about Korean costumes and wrapping cloths in this period. Taking care of silkworms, spinning thread, weaving cloth, sewing and embroidery were all women's tasks. In the strict Confucian era women were discouraged from any type of intellectual pursuit. By developing textiles and designs these women were able to experience the joy of creation. Their exuberance is contagious.
