Editorial Reviews

This masterful rendition of the classic fairy tale suitably answers a child's ponderings of how, exactly, a prince can climb the cascading tresses of a damsel in distress to rescue her from a prison tower--without causing her a bad-hair day. Named after a forbidden flower in an enchanted garden, Rapunzel is the story of a young girl of exquisite beauty who has been imprisoned from birth by a cruel witch. Her only connection to the outside world is her unforgettably long brown hair, which she flings out her lofty window at the beckon of a nocturnal suitor. Set in turn-of-the-century America, this live-action film is part of the series From the Brothers Grimm, a set of award-winning productions that translate traditional tales into the American idiom while remaining faithful to the folk original. Wrapped in gorgeous cinematography, this short and sweet tale (15-minutes) will grab viewers' attention through its enchanting blend of realism and imagination, showing a courageous girl's struggle for freedom. Not to mention the delicious elements of a good story--a wicked stepmother, a handsome prince, a curse lifted by the tears of an amorous woman, and the proverbial happy ending. The film's recommended audience is ages 5 and older, but children younger than 10 may find some of the scenes confusing and unsettling. --Lynn Gibson

Booklist, November 15, 1978

...gently transferred from the realm of fantasy to gripping reality in this live-action re-creation of Grimm brothers' favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, October 2, 2003

This review is from: Rapunzel, Rapunzel [VHS] (VHS Tape)
On a whim we recently borrowed this from our local library. My 3.5 year old daughter loved it, and I did too (39 yr old). It's beautiful but not glossy or slick. The editorial review said younger kids may not get it, but my daughter had no trouble. Perhaps that is because she's very familiar with the Paul O. Zelinsky book of Rapunzel (which I also highly recommend). The dialog and narration in the two were surprisingly similar, except this video did not have Rapunzel get pregnant (a potential sticking point with the book for some). We watched it many times the week we borrowed it from the library, and we'll undoubtedly borrow it again sometime, but still to me the price seems high for a 15 minute VHS.

This review is from: Rapunzel, Rapunzel [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As much as I was looking foward to seeing this movie, I got a litle dissapointed because I thought this movie would be so much more for all the praise it got , but what else to expect from a 15 minute movie,if your interested in seeing this movie please look it up on ebay what there asking here is outrageous , I bought it there for $2.99, or try to check it out on your local library, if your looking for a good movie from this series try Willa:an american Snow White

5.0 out of 5 stars A great short film perfect for the classroom, May 11, 2000

This short film presents Rapunzel without the cute singing animals or glossiness of other fairy tale films. Set in America at the turn of the last century, this film is gritty with a happy ending. The Rapunzel tale is full of psychological meaning and impact that this film conveys better than any other. If you enjoyed Donna Jo Napoli's novel, "Zel," you will find this film interesting to watch. The film is also suitable for grade school audiences.
