5.0 out of 5 stars contemporary, February 14, 2006

This recording is my favorite classical guitar cd (and i have a lot...), but it is definitely not for everyone. It is amongst the more modern recordings available for classical guitar. If you appreciate that, this is also one of the best recordings, but otherwise you might consider this to be "junk." Memories from Cimarrón is also significant for Hans Werner Henze fans, since no recording of El Cimarrón is currently available.

The quality of the works is admirable, and it is really something special to have this much quality music on one disk, especially in the world of contemporary music where a couple duds often slide onto recordings unhampered by the filters of time. This is one album that will hopefully continue to defy such filters. Highly recommended, but only if you know what you're getting into.

1.0 out of 5 stars Time capsule of mostly bad music, April 27, 2003

The 1970s was a bad, bad time for a lot of classical music and there's no better proof than this reissued set of recordings by the great guitarist/composer Leo Brouwer. Trouble is that other than Brouwer's mostly tuneless but sort of compelling Espiral Eterna the rest of this album is junk. Steer clear of this if you like Brouwer's material from the 1980s up to now, or if you like Brouwer's work from the 1960s. Most of these works are third-tier knock-offs of stuff Penderecki did much better six to ten years earlier. If you get this CD AT ALL Espiral Eterna is the ONLY reason; even Brouwer's other selection (track 3) isn't all that good. Even great composers can't help making or playing some [bad stuff] and this, from what I've heard so far, is it.
