A rare debut, December 1, 2001
This review is from: Rare Creature (Paperback)
Kelley Seda is a refreshing new talent in the comics scene. RARE CREATURE is her first major work, and for someone just getting going, she shows an incredible courage in breaking the boundaries of storytelling--both in subject, and in form.
Just who is the titular RARE CREATURE? Is it the woman who stumbles into a society of "freaks," or are those freaks themselves the true rarity, people unbound by normalcy? Or is it the child she ends up bearing?
Kelley Seda's comics display a wonderful dichotomy. The cartooning style is clean and clear, while the story itself is more opaque. Repeated reads lend more insight into the unfolding tale. Or just staring at the linework can be a treat unto itself.
Give this book a try. When Seda does her next book and becomes the new comic book hot shot, you can say you knew her when.

I spent some time on this.., February 8, 2010
This review is from: Rare Creature (Paperback)
I read this graphic novel slowly to catch everything it was saying. The author uses very few words..and much more pictures to tell the story. I think this will be the kind of book I will read and study more than once, to get the meanings out of it. I will look for other graphic novels by this author.
