4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of Rare Earth Minerals, June 21, 2007
This single volume provides a good overview of the chemistry, crustal abundances, chondrite-normalized abundances, and geochemical behavior of rare earth minerals. Color photographs are provided of important rare-earth minerals. On the other hand, very little attention is devoted to the modern-day uses of these metals. Little information is given on how the rare earth elements got discovered and now they got their names.

The high relative abundance of REE in carbonate-rich rocks is given a moderate amount of attention. After all, carbonatites tend to be enriched in REE. This is true of both primary and secondary deposits.

Several important REE--bearing sites are discussed. These include Bayan Obo, Kola Peninsula, Brazilian laterite--bearing locations, Mountain Pass, Kangankunde, etc.
