Format:Audio CD
I bought the CD of these 2002 performances when it was still at full price; now I see that Hyperion has moved it to its medium-price Helios label. The sound, as is usual with Hyperion, is very inviting, and the performances are fine. Graffin is fine violinist, with lovely tone and plenty of technique, which he seems to put always at the service of the music. The music here is not highly consequential, but it is unpretentious, is always easy on the ear and is dispatched with finesse and, when required, energy. Thierry Fischer and the Ulster Orchestra provide solid support. It's by no means an indispensable issue, but at the Helios price, violin enthusiasts needn't hesitate. If they seek solider fare, Graffin has recorded the three Saint-Saens violin concertos also for Hyperion and also very satisfying.
