4.0 out of 5 stars not necessarily EASY, but can be done
I was able to grow myself some decent tigger vines by
1) not even touching the seeds when the outside temperature drops below 60 at night (we're zone 9 bordering on 8, so we're ready in april)
2) very carefully using park seed starter domes (to further protect these delicate vines from cold, disease, etc)

1.0 out of 5 stars not a good melon
I grew these in a a sunny area in zone 8, and they grew well, giving us lots of the worst melons that I have ever grown. They are small with relatively thin flesh, which would be OK, except that the flavor was really poor.

We grow many varieties of melons, including the small varieties of watermelon, and most turn out delicious. But not Tigger. I am...

2) very carefully using park seed starter domes (to further protect these delicate vines from cold, disease, etc)
3) vigorously soaping their transplantation area and then hitting them with fungicide weekly

They hve a tendency to pick up any disease in the air, soil, or water, and very sensitive to temperature. Anything below 55 will stunt and then kill them. They're even worse than cantaloupes with respect to their sensitivity.

Easy, no. But very satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this melon!, January 17, 2009
This review is from: Rare Tigger Melon 10 Seeds - Heirloom - Delicious -Easy
I absolutely love this melon! When everything was frying in the garden in June '08 due to a heat spike, this plant was growing 2" a day! It's originally from Armenia, whose summers average around 90 degrees a day- perfect in Texas! They look so unique I was sharing seeds with co-workers whose kids get the biggest kick out of the green/dark green striped melons as they turn to orange/light orange stripe! About the size of a softball, they do have a "cantelope type" taste, but better. And they're just right for an individual serving size.

5.0 out of 5 stars All of hirts seeds, March 26, 2009

All of my hirts seeds germinated. Im not why everyone is having a problem. I have my tiger melons germinated, transplanted and thriving like crazy. I also have most of the varities of black tomatos seeded, transplanted and thriving. I have had to give away some of my plants because i have too many!

I also purchased the black watermelon and plan to give out those as gifts, they have all germinated and grown strong. I give hirts a 5 stars for everything all around great service, great seeds and i plan to buy the rest of my plants, seeds and anything else from hirts. Thanks so much this years garden will be prime!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tigger melons were fun and easy!, July 1, 2010

I decided to try growing my own garden for the first time ever this year, and I chose several varieties of unusual seeds (Rainbow peppers, purple cauliflower, ect...). Eight of the ten seeds came up, I gave away six and transplanted two, and after that, I have done extremely little with them. Pests didn't seem to care for them, the less I watered them, the better they seemed to be, and while everything else was suffering in the extreme Mississippi heat and humidity, these were thriving. I had to build two trellis/fences yesterday to contain them, as the vines were far outgrowing the melon patch and headed for the road and neighbor's yard. I have at least 12 adult sized melons, 6 in various stages of ripening, and countless babies still appearing on the vines. They grow fast and the ripe fruit smells heavenly, and though they aren't as sweet as most melons, they tasted better than I expected, and I appreciate the taste because I don't care for overly sweet foods. I love them and will most definitely be growing them again next year.

Anyone having trouble with the seeds- don't over water or try too hard. Of the ones I gave away, most died due to over watering and fussing with them too much, trying to protect the seedlings from the elements. These are tough, hardy little plants. Stick them in the ground and leave them alone. They know what to do.

We grow many varieties of melons, including the small varieties of watermelon, and most turn out delicious. But not Tigger. I am surprised that there are some good ratings on Tigger melons, but for my limited growing space, there are many much better options.

I only planted one seed. The vine survived the draught but never produced a melon. The first freeze took it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A small disappointment., September 30, 2011

Seeds grew well for me; tiny, but beautifully fragrant melons, of stunning apppearance, but bland, bland, bland. Almost no taste whatsoever, even grilled. Not unpleasant, but certainly not worth the anticipation, and that fragrance was like a broken promise.
Next year, I'm building a chickenwire fortress to protect my melons, and since I saved some seeds anyway, I may plant these along the outside edge to provide a squirrel diversion.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk seeds, done with this seller., June 10, 2011

This review is from: Rare Tigger Melon 10 Seeds - Heirloom - Delicious -Easy
I planted these in very, very good soil, after we were done with cold temps below 65. Ended up being in the beginning of May. We babied the hell out of where the seeds were to make sure they would sprout considering how expensive they are to order from here. Not a single one showed a leaf or sprout above ground. I will update if they end up sprouting, but I haven't seen a single sign of them coming up as yet and it's been far too long.

The 4 of the 8 tomato plants I received from here also died, 2 of the last 4 are looking grim but I think I've managed to make them pull through...we'll see though. Soil is very, very good in my garden, there is no reason for them to have died/not sprouted as every other plant in there is doing marvelously, only the Hirts ones are having issues.

I don't think I'll be buying again, especially with all the other things I've seen this seller do (stealing images that aren't his and just removing signatures and watermarks from the photos WITHOUT the original owner's permission, it has nothing to do with the plants but it's distasteful and disgraceful)

Also have checked out forums on professional gardening sites that have entire sections about how bad Hirts can be...I decided to take the chance anyway, it seems to have been a mistake. I'll be getting seeds and plants from elsewhere.

UPDATE: Gonna add on to this review and confirm that it was indeed these seeds that were trash, every single one of them never even sprouted, I got some other seeds from a different vendor on here, same soil, same care, they grew up strong and fast. Hirt's seeds are junk..

1.0 out of 5 stars all seedling died after a few weeks, November 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rare Tigger Melon 10 Seeds - Heirloom - Delicious -Easy
I was so delighted at how readily these seeds sprang out of the soil. They grew quickly up to a few inches, then... died. My Victorian Perfumed Melon seedlings died in exactly the same way.

I did some google-research, and it the symptoms match up with a plant canker. The only way my plants could have gotten it was contaminated soil, beetles, or if the seeds came from a parent plant that was infected. Since the first two are impossible, it means Hirt's sold me infected seeds.

It was tremendously disappointing. However, other seeds i've gotten from Hirt's are working out fine (alpine strawberries and jaltomate), so the problem may just be limited to their melon seeds (which makes some sense, since the canker is a melon-specific disease).

I won't buy any additional melon seeds of any kind from Hirt's, but i'd consider other plant types.
