Odds and Ends,

This review is from: Rarezas (Audio CD)
Spanish folk metal band Mago de Oz released the 2-disc collection Rarezas in 2006. The band takes a straightforward hard rock (and at times heavy metal) sound and infuses it with folk elements - lots of violins, flutes and Celtic melodies - for a truly memorable experience. Think Iron Maiden meets Jethro Tull...in Spanish.
Rarezas is essentially a collection of odds and ends. There are b-sides, alternate versions, live songs, acoustic tracks and a handful of pretty terrific covers (Iron Maiden, Kansas, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Baron Rojo and Rainbow). The version of Rainbow's "Man on the Silver Mountain" with Doro Pesch is my favorite track, but there are a lot of really great gems collected here. If you're new to the band, you'll probably be better off with one of their studio albums (La Ciudad De Los Arboles was my first) or the excellent Grandes Exitos (W/Dvd) set. If you're already a Mago de Oz fan, this is an essential purchase.
