Editorial Reviews

Before Rod Stewart became known as a global rock superstar and master interpreter of the Great American Songbook, the albums he made for the Mercury label between 1969 and 1974 established him as one of rock's most distinctive and expressive singers and gifted songwriters. The five solo albums that Stewart released during that period-The Rod Stewart Album (1969), Gasoline Alley (1970), Every Picture Tells a Story (1971), Never a Dull Moment (1972) and Smiler (1974) feature a rootsy, folk-blues-leaning style, steeped in traditional soul and R&B. This brand-new, two-CD, 24-track collection features rare tracks from these early solo albums. Included are alternate versions, singles, B-sides, studio outtakes and covers of The Who, Bob Dylan, Goffin/King, Cole Porter, Jimi Hendrix, and more, plus previously unreleased BBC Radio One live performances of 'Maggie May' and 'Country Comfort' with Faces.

4.0 out of 5 stars Odds and Sods September 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a two CD 2013 Mercury records release. It contains 24 tracks with a total playing time of one hour and forty-one minutes. The compositions are alternate versions and outtakes from the five original albums RS made during his 1969 -74 contract with Mercury records. All the material has been previously released throughout the years in various compilations and box sets.

However, this is the first time all the tracks have appeared within one release. The sound quality is relatively flawless. The twenty-three page booklet contains comprehensive liner notes authored by Scott Schinder. There's also a detailed listing of time, place and musicians associated with each track.

This release captures the young artist evolving as a major solo rock / blues /folk performer. During this period, Rod had a duel career, fronting the Faces, as well as pursuing a solo career. Eventually, with the mega seller release of" Every Picture Tells a Story" and the hit single"Maggie May", Rod would depart the Faces.

Additionally, the session musicians playing on these recordings are all rock legends.
Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones were all Rods' mates from the Faces. Mike Waller was the drummer in Rod's earlier band, Steampacket and he also was a member with RS in the Jeff Beck Group.

Pete Sears played on several studio dates with Rod and he would eventually make his mark with Jefferson Starship. Martin Quittenton, aside from being a guitar virtuoso, also co-wrote "Maggie May".

Last but not least, the legendary Long John Baldry and Madeline Bell on backing vocals is truly a musical pleasure.

Fans who appreciate this period of Rod's career will be richly rewarded by rediscovering the songs through alternate versions and outtakes.

If you are a Rod Stewart fan - then yes this is brillant.
The album brings back memories of the raw and rich talent Rod showed in his early years.
he bought to life the music we truly loved from him - delivering performances on this album that i believe revealed his love for performing, and yet also showed his humour with different versions of some classic

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting collectors double disc November 28, 2013
By Dt
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Fascinating to hear these early versions of so many classic Rod Stewart songs, however this is a bit of disc for collectors - the solo albums have the best versions of the songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collection for the die-hard fan November 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a great collection for the very devoted fan. There are wonderful alternate versions of 60's and 70's classics and deep-cuts, but it won't hold much interest for the casual listener. If you want 'classic Rod,' pick up Time or a greatest hits album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart October 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's Rod Stewart ....what's not to love! It is a little different with it being his early years, Maggie May doesn't have the same words. But if you love Rod Stewart it doesn't matter.

3.0 out of 5 stars It would remind you of Rod Stewart September 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A good friend would always opine that the Guinness you get in America would remind you of real Guinness.
This is certainly not a 5 star release, nor is it it a two star release, so I'll run down the lane of mediocrity here and paraphrase my friend: This would remind you of the real Rod. And maybe that would be a good thing for RS to know and embrace as well. You can toss nearly everything he's done since Atlantic Crossing into one of 2 files: bad taste or smarmy. And it was never as though he were the second coming of Howlin Wolf. All the same, he was a lot of fun back in the day, and if you simply time froze the recordings from Truth to Never a Dull (which actually had a few dull), you'd be hard pressed to reconcile those with the poseur prancing through every bad idea from disco thru the sorta great american songbook (esplain me what's so great about that stuff).
This collection is fun to listen to, of no real consequence, but it does remind you that when you went to see him live with some mash up of Faces, the man could carry a show and tap something primal. A nod was as good as a wink back then. So, this is sort of a nostalgia trip back to when he was working out what it meant to be the genuine article. I listen to it and smile wistfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hearken back to the great days of rock and roll October 2, 2013

The Faces work as well as the early solo stuff is just too good not to keep listening to. Too bad Rod was ill for their induction into the Hall of Fame.
