TRIBUTE TO A GREAT DRUMMER,
By
This review is from: Rarum, Vol. 20: Selected Recordings (Audio CD)
This is a tribute from "ECM records" to the most recorded drummer of this label and He is one of the most interesting drummer in the world . Few more than teen- ager, in the 60's Jon was yet with George Russell , Karin Krog , Steve Kuhn , then drummer of early Jan garbarek band, then with the Keith Jarrett quartet ( the here included 2 traks are something of the best of that band) , he has played with all the most important musicians : Holland, Wheeler, Vitous, Lloyd, Taylor , Surman, Rava,Lovano,Towner, Stanko and many more. Here you find a sampler of his unique style( above all in "war orphans" )always a musical pleasure and never heavy ( listen him so light and sparkle in "Per Ulv" -recorded in the mid 70's jazz rock era-) discover his amazing musical approach( "my song", "personal mountain") learn to recognize him once heard even only the distinctive touch on his wonderful old "K" istanbul cymbal, you will never forget him ."I never practice drums , I play it " he said... discover the difference on this CD .Drummers can't miss.

A very nice collection ....,
By THX1138b (NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rarum, Vol. 20: Selected Recordings (Audio CD)
... especially if you're a jazz drummer. Expect to get lost. Jon threw out the book on time keeping a long time ago and never looked back. There is some incredible stuff here, ranging from complex to simple, very free to very tight. It all centers on Jon's unique style, so even though the songs come from artists as remote as Ralph Towner and Kitel Bjornstad, the whole CD has a clear muiscal center. --There is an insert with some photos, but only a few aphorisms from the man himself, which is too bad. If drumming matters to you and you've never heard Jon Christensen, start here.

A True Master of Time and Space,
By
This review is from: Rarum, Vol. 20: Selected Recordings (Audio CD)
To call Jon Christensen "the thinking man's drummer" would be to miss his incredible sensitivity to the musical feeling going on around him, and his particularly subtle way of engaging and punctuating rhythmic time by means of his signature, nuanced cymbal work and thoughtfully placed drum accents. Nevertheless, his unique and dynamic "thinking" about the relationship of sound to silence, of rhythm being both stated explicitly and not, make him one of the very few drummers on the planet who, by one stroke of a cymbal, or a single pattern or phrase laid down, are both instantly recognizable and absolutely joined, without fanfare or bombast, to their fellow musicians. His contributions to the patented ECM sound (care of producer Manfred Eicher and engineering marvel Jan Erik Kongshaug) are legend. This sampling here, on Mr. Christensen's own Rarum selection, ought rightly to inspire the listener's delving more deeply into the drummer's extensively documented catalog. A few further recommendations, beyond the current selected recordings, all featuring percussion maestro Jon Christensen at his creative peak: Rainer Bruninghaus-"Freigeweht," Jan Garbarek-"Paths, Prints" and "Photo with Blue Sky...," Mike Nock-"Ondas," Keith Jarrett-"My Song" and "Belonging," Terje Rypdal-"Waves," Ralph Towner-"Solstice/Sound & Shadows," Bobo Stenson-"Witchi-Tai-To," Eberhard Weber-"Yellow Fields," and Miroslav Vitous-"First Meeting." And that's only scratching the surface of this genuinely modern master and his hugely influential body of artistic work! Enjoy!!
