Outstanding new CD,

This review is from: Raspberry Man (Audio CD)
This entertaining and delightful new CD contains two works, "Raspberry Man" and "Emmanuel Changed" by composer Bill Vollinger, perhaps today's leading exponent of speech music. The first work is a piquant discussion, set to appropriate undergirding music by an instrumental ensemble, about a man who used to stand outside a Manhattan restaurant, giving passersby "Bronx cheers." The work ends with the narrator wondering what ever became of him. "Emmanuel Changed" deals with a young boy who was a hellion in class, and who had no friends. But one summer, he came back from vacation quite a changed young lad. Both works exhibit Vollinger's mastery of this form, and ably demonstrate his compassion for humanity. In that regard, the listener's heart will be touched by both of these moving pieces. The remainder of the interactive disk is filled up with a video of a live performance of "Raspberry Man," scores for both works, and other tidbits. Heartily recommended! David DeBoor Canfield
