Finsterforst - Mach Dich Frei

Biography

Like no other band, Finsterforst managed to claim the depths of Germany`s Black Forest as their own source of myths: the German sevenpiece erected a monument full of nature romanticism for their home soil and filled it with an astonishing wealth of details. Mach Dich Frei! – the forth Finsterforst album – boldly crosses all boundaries of the pagan and folk metal genres and invites ... Read more in Amazon's Finsterforst Store

Editorial Reviews

The nature-loving warriors hailing from the German Black Forest release their fourth album, Rastlos ("Restless") and offer the listener their definite masterpiece so far. The five mighty and overlong songs present themselves as a sweeping diversity of melodies and moods. Finterforst combine melancholic folklore, untamed Black Metal fury with majestic soundscapes, thus giving the songs a hypnotic dynamic. This particular effect is strengthened by the sophisticated and fitting use of authentic instruments like the accordion or a full horn section and vocals ranging from grim to choral.

I do not speak German, but it is still very enjoyable.

Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of their past work or the folk metal genre.

The production quality is superb, and it is obvious how much time went into this album!

Huge fan of their previous two albums. I was concerned for any future album when their lead vocalist left the band. But now that it's here I can rest easy knowing they made an excellent choice in Oliver Berlin. The album is fantastic from start to finish and stays true to their heavy and folk roots. Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of their past work or the folk metal genre.

My God! This album is pure folk metal perfection! Seriously! I do not say that often! I do call myself a folk/viking/pagan metal enthusiast and do listen to most bands that hold that genre. The only feeling I can describe that this album gives me is similar to the first time I listened to Equilibrium's first album Turis Fratyr! The production quality is superb, and it is obvious how much time went into this album! There is not one bad aspect to this album! I seriously can't put it down! Get it and be prepared to be taken away to a far off land!

I thoroughly enjoy this album! It is highly imaginative. I do not speak German, but it is still very enjoyable. I really appreciate the folk music that is out there, and this was a very good gem to find. Coming from an Ensiferum background, this band is different, but well established in folk metal. Cheers to Finsterfrost!

I stumbled on Finsterforst by accident thanks to Amazon's "other customers bought this" feature.

Rastlos consists of very long songs that, to me, never become boring. The music is very heavy and you could assign a bunch of labels to it: some "doom" (very heavy and dark), some folk elements (notably some according passages, reminds me a little bit of Equilibrium), and overall dense and layered melodies with an atmospheric sound. The vocals include the style of growling fairly typical in much European metal these days as well as "clean" singing. There are plenty of fast passages as well as slow, melodic, and moody phrases with choruses.

Overall, I think this is a beautiful piece of music and I'm happy to have found Finsterforst. I'll be looking at their other releases.
