If you like partying music this is the one to get. This band jams to the fullest and keeps the party rockin'. Well worth picking up if you can find it! Keep Rockin'.

album defines baltimore hard rock scene - early '90s,

When I first heard these guys on 98Rock and DC101 I knew I had to have this album. I left the b'more-d.c area in '93 and now in CA, 13 years after it came out, I'm stoked to finally have it. This is kick-bum blue-collar drinkin' music at it's best. This is a must have. I give 5 stars because the most memorable songs stayed fresh after all this time. I wish there were more of it around.

I saw these guys maybe five times at the PEPPERMINT BEACH CLUB in Virginia Beach. I like to think that we had a helping hand in building up this band, because the crowd always turned out for them and they loved coming to play at the beach. I even got them to autograph my cassette. I still have it. The song "Wind" got a bunch of air time on Z-Rock 92.1 Moyock-Chesapeake. They started to hit it big, then same old story, I remember going to Hammerjacks in Baltomore (that's how I spell it) and seeing Brian Jack with a new band. He was all tanned up and wearing gold jewelry and no shoes. He was yelling at the crowd "How do you like my new ax man?" I guess he had hired a new gun for his band but the chemistry was not there. I thought man what a shame such a great band broke up. This album maybe only good for people who were around the Southern Harbor towns that they frequented. If you were there you will love this, if your into eighties metal its worth checking out.

CHILDS PLAY ROCKS !!,

WHILE ON ONE OF MY FREQUENT TRIPS TO MY FAVORITE RETRO MUSIC STORE I INQUIRED ABOUT THIS GROWING RARE CD OF CHILDS PLAY. THE OWNER TOLD ME HE THOUGHT THAT HE HAD A COPY THAT HE HAD PUT BACK YEARS AGO WHEN ALTERNATIVE MUSIC CHANGED HIS INVENTORY ALMOST OVERNITE. ( THIS WAS BEFORE THE STORE WENT RETRO ) ANYWAY TO
MY SURPRISE HE HAD A NEW COPY OF THIS SOUGHT AFTER CD DOWN IN THE BASEMENT. JACKPOT !!!!!!!!! I CANT DESCRIBE HOW ESTACTIC I WAS. WHAT A FIND, THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR FINDING THE HARD TO GET STUFF AND FINDING IT NEW, AND THE COST VERY AFFORDABLE. WHEW I ESCAPED ONE THERE. ANYWAY AGAIN WHAT A FIND IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK. THESE GUYS WERE JUST GETTING CRANKED UP AND DOING IT RIGHT. LIKE SO MANY OTHERS I HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU GET IT WHILE YOU CAN. MUSIC LIKE THIS IS PRICELESS AND DISSAPEARING LIKE THE DINOSAURS. THE CD ROCKS AND DESERVES TO BE AVAILABLE TO ANY COLLECTOR OR DIE HARD ROCKER. TRUST ME IM THE TNROCKDOC AND I GUARANTEE IT !!!!! ALSO SEE MY LIST " THE BEST ROCK YOU MISSED " FOR MORE GREAT MUSIC THAT YOU MAY BE MISSING OUT ON. ROCK ON!!!! NOTE: CONTRARY TO OTHER REVIEWS THIS WAS NOT CHILDS PLAYS ONLY RELEASE THEY RECORDED " LONG WAY" IN 1993 AND ITS VERY RARE TO FIND BUT WELL WORTH THE SEARCH. THE TNROCKDOC FOUND HIS AND NEVER NEW IT EXISTED TALK ABOUT A UNEXPECTED FIND. THIS ONE IS A TURN AROUND FROM THE FIRST MORE BLUESY BUT A DARN GOOD ONE. I LOVE IT WHEN THESE THINGS HAPPEN THATS WHAT I LIVE FOR. THANKS MATT AT THE RETRO YOUR THE MAN.

Loved the band but the singer was a MAJOR poser.,

I used to go see this band at a small club called Manny's in Rockville, Md. and always enjoyed the show the few times I saw them....for a young band they were pretty darned good. However, the singer (who's name escapes me) was a poser in every sense of the word. The rest of the band would be inside doing sound checks, mingling with the fans or whatever but this loser would stay in the limo (as if they could afford one!) with groupies fawning all over him like he was Robert Plant or something. That kind of big headed ego ruined it for me. Ok, he was a decent looking guy but humility goes a long way in all aspects of life and especially when you're trying get started and make a name for your band and in my opinion the guy wasn't THAT great a singer anyway, not even close. If I'm not mistaken his pretty boy attitude is what killed the band.
I had the cassette back then but lost it a long time ago and thought I'd see if I could find the CD but for a minimum of $23.00 on Amazon? No way, they weren't that good.

Most underrated and overlooked album ever!,

This album is awesome...classic late 80's early 90's hair band. Poor timing on release, grunge was just getting big. I grew up locally to them and I have had this album since it's release and still love it!

True Blue Collar Gem,

This Baltimore band never got their full due. This album is solid from top to bottom. "Wind", My Bottle", and "Evicted" are great songs. "Good Ol' Rock and Roll" is a decent opening song. They may never have made a second album, but "Rat Race" comes in first place in my book.

a decent party rock album,
By
This review is from: Rat Race (Audio CD)
I'm sure the other reviewers of this album have fond memories of the band, but this CD is really nothing special. That's not to say it isn't a decent rock album, but it isn't exceptional by any means. It follows the basic sleaze-rock/hair metal formula laid down by bands like L.A. Guns and Faster Pussycat, with lots of bluesy rockers and the occasional ballad. The lyrics are pretty basic, and focus on drinking, partying, and sex. Child's Play may not bring anything new to the genre, but their debut album is still a fun listen. If you like your rock loud, sleazy, and essentially devoid of anything meaningful, then Rat Race is an album worth picking up.
