Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the 'Philosopher of Soul'. Rated Extraordinaire from 1977 and Ever Ready from 1978 were produced by the legendary Detroit producer Don Davis. Davis had already produced Taylor for nearly 10 years when these albums were made. Johnnie Taylor has a big fan base all over the world and as Ever Ready has not been available on CD before and Rated Extraordinaire has been out of print for over 10 years, we expect strong demand.

I think when people think of Johnnie Taylor, they think of blues. Who's Makin Love, Disco Lady, and more recently Good Love/Last 2 Dollars. Deep fans think all the way back to Take Care of Your Homework, or Little Bluebird which shows the Southern gritty blues JT tried to accomplish after the death of mentor Sam Cooke, which was done not accidentally to differentiate himself from the image Cooke was trying to push JT into. However if you follow the career of JT, I think you will find someone, like Cooke, who was always pushing his musicality to the next level. These 2 albums show that. The message is pretty much the same but more "music" was added as said in the other review more flutes etc. But more than just the production of flutes/strings, JT sang these songs tenderly without losing his gritty edge and at no point in either tune he sang this way does the song not fit JT. I think because commercially these albums didn't do as great as his previous things they get lost in his discography but they shouldn't. Soul Fillet, even though the message may be a little different, is a tune JT sang masterfully. Raining Outside too. JT sang these as if they were coming from him to a special someone. The dance tunes on these albums are great as well because he puts his style into it but keeps the musicality as the time provided. In sum, these 2 albums show Johnnie Taylor's versatility as a singer and shows how timeless his talent really was.

Thanks to Soul Brother Records for releasing these 1977-1978 Johnnie Taylor albums on CD in their complete form. Bits and pieces of these have been available on Legacy compilations which takes them out of context of the original LP releases. These post-Stax albums were both produced by Mr. Don Davis - now a very successful banker in Detroit - using many of the same musicians and the same studios as the finger clicking Stax period albums although these are more Detroit than Memphis, more strings and flutes less horns. Great to have them back in print.

I heard "soul fillet" from the Ever Ready album for the first time back in 1982 and to date it is my favorite by JT. I always felt it had a little jazzy taste to it because it was so velvety smooth. Found the album shortly thereafter and never understood why such a treasure was never placed on cd. The exact same could be said for "Rated Extraordinaire," which I believe is some of Johnnie's best work. These two exceptional albums on one cd is an absolute must for music enthusiasts.
