5.0 out of 5 stars Rats: A very good book
This book was very interesting, yet gory at the same time. It kept me up at night - it was scary! It's probably not a book for younger kids because of all the gore and death. Overall it is a very descriptive book that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and chilling horror book, November 20, 2000

Before reading "Rats," the only book I had ever read by Paul Zindel was The Pigman. After reading the back cover of "Rats", I knew I had to read it to see if Paul Zindel did as good a job with horror books as he did with fiction/drama books. "Rats" turned out to be a great book in every way. Thousands of rats are terrorizing the New York City area by appearing in toilets, pipes, and many other areas and then killing any person that they can sink their teeth into. 15-year-old Sarah and her ten-year-old brother Michael know a little bit about rats because they have an albino pet rat named Surfer. Their dad, Mr. Macafee is blamed by many people including the city mayor that it's his fault that these rats are doing this because he lives close to and takes a part in the city dump area where the rats first started their killing spree. Sarah and Michael have to use their knowledge of rats and find a way to save the people around New York City from being killed while trying to stay alive and escape the terror of the rats' claws themselves.

I liked "Rats" a lot better than I did The Pigman. I think Paul Zindel does a much better job writing horror books like "Rats." The book is unbelievably compelling and it's even scary at times. When I read about some of the explanations about what the rats looked like and how they terrorized the people, I could see a picture of a huge rat like it was staring me right in the face. If you like well written and compelling horror books, I definitely recommend getting "Rats."

Have you ever been grosed out by rats, being twice their size and being able to kill people maybe even smarter than you.
Once i started reading the book Rats i really enjoyed where the rats came out of nowhere to kill people. The rats were dump rats. But the rats wanted Sarah and Michael's rat Surfer. The rats were extreamly smart and they were planing something big. The rats talked to eachother curiosly.
One of the best things i liked were that every time you read it, it leaves you wiith questios.
I recommened this book to people that like gross things and people who like curious books.

The city of New York is closing its biggest dump. The people who run the dump, including the father of fifteen-year-old Sarah and ten-year-old Michael, are paving over the entire dump. They will be making that spot into a city park, and the dumping of garbage there will stop. Sarah is worried when they start paving the dump, which is right next to her home. There are dangerous gasses given off by rotting garbage that could cause explosions or something just as deadly. Her father, though, reassures her that everything will be fine.

The dump is almost paved over when the rats start to appear. They are crawling out of toilets in Sarah's neighborhood. They swim by the dozens up through pool filter systems and crawl into cracks in houses. These rats are vicious, too, tearing apart the people who try to stop or to kill them. Sarah and Michael seem to have been spared because they have a pet rat, Surfer, who makes high-pitched chattering noises whenever the dump rats come near them.

Soon the rats are out of control. There seem to be millions of them, and they are smart. They are ambushing those who try to stop them. They have a plan and they have the power of communication. Sarah has done a great deal of research on rats because of her attachment to Surfer, and she thinks she might be able to help the people who are trying to get rid of the rats.

This book was fast-paced and exciting. I liked that Sarah was a strong character who was able to help herself and the entire city. I never felt like I got to know the characters very well, though. Most of them were only briefly in the story and then gone. The story was overly gruesome, too, with rats eating people alive. A final problem I had with the book was that the end seemed a little too simple. Everything was better all of a sudden, but it didn't seem like enough had changed to make it so.

5.0 out of 5 stars The awsome book review of "Rats", November 5, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rats (Paperback)
I just finished a book called Rats. By Paul Zindel. It was a great book to tell you the truth. The only thing is, is that this book is pretty gory and violent with lots of blood etc. But I was impressed the way the author of this book described how the rats looked and acted toward characters in the book. I mean he would explain every detail from head to toe, of what they looked like, what the rats did to kill their victims or how they ran or how they would have small to mediem to large sized. This author was amazing. As I read I could picture all the action that was happening as if it was happening right infront of me. As if I was one of the characters in this book. If you ever get a chance to look for and read this book please do so, because let me tell you this when you decide to read this book and you begin to read, time will go by so fast and you will realize that you are allready almost done. Thats how exciting and thrilling this book is. You pick this book up you don't want to put it down until finished, because it just catches you and you don't want to stop reading.

Zindel, Paul (20000. Rats.
New York: Hyperion Paperbacks

Leroy was attacked by the rats and ripped to peices. Then the rats were getting out of control and they were attacking people near the dump. They descide to go to Aunt B's house for awhile. On the way there the rats follow them in the water. MArge trys to help but they get inside her truck and eat her alive. Then they get to their aunt's house. When it was night time the rats came into the house and stole there pet rat Surfer. Then they send tuna boats to net the rat and kill them but the rats just got on board and eat everyboby. Then Sarah and Michael go to the dump. When they get there Sarah plays Creature Freature on the labtop and all the rats fall asleep. Then the they bomb it and all the rats die, the king rat is still alive. Then they kill the King rat by electricity it.

Machael has a pet rat name Surfer who betrays him in the end. He has long and blond hair and is ten years old.

I liked but it was a little to gory for me. Having the rats eat you and rip you to peaices creeps me out. When the people on the tuna boat got the eyes, nose ears and ceeks ripeed off and when Radman got his head torn off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angry Rats, March 4, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rats (Paperback)
This book is great for people who would want to read about ratstaking over the city. In this book Rats, blake big ugly rats are attaking peoples bodies and also kiling people in water by jumping onto then and going into their bodies. They are taking over the world. this book is more for people who like reading about violence or blood and guts. a good quality of the book is where the rats attack and fight back with the rats. I would recomend this book to both male and female but more to male because it has gross parts like rats eating their bodies and eyes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rats, April 23, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rats (Paperback)
----I am read the book Rats and here are a few reasons why I like this book. The first reason why I like this book is because out of all the books I have read by this author this has been the best one so far. The second reason is that I can only read books that have action and suspense in them and to enjoy them too. The third reason is that I like books with blood and gore, and trust me this book has loads of that.

The best part of the book is at the beginning. Why? Well because that is the most gruesome part of the whole book. That is when Leroy the person that stays at the dump during the day, was shooting rats with his BB gun, but one day the rats took revenge on him and ate him completely except for the bones.

The conflict and the climax are the best story elements that are in this book. The conflict is that people have noticed an insrease in the rat population recently. I like the conflict in this book because thats when most of the people are getting scared to death by the rats. Also I like how the author expresses the characters emotions when they do get scared. The second is the climax because thats when everything breaks loose. All of the rats break out of the dump and they destroy anyone who gets in their way. I like the climax because Paul Zindel briefly describes how they escape from the dump.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rats and What its About, January 18, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rats (Hardcover)
I liked the book because of the action, twists, and chill's of not knowing what will happen next. For exampel town sudenly becomes infested with man eating rats and all of the attacks hapening every were.

The best part of the book is when the giant rat king comes out of the sewer after a bomb explodes and the main charecters think he's dead. And when they lest expect it he attacks.

The things the creator of this book is best at would be the suspense and the action. The book pulls you into the story to. That is why I like it.
