4.0 out of 5 stars Jance is a reliable author
This Joanna Brady mystery is a good, if not outstanding, addition to the series. A local gun dealer, Clyde Phillips is dead. Was it a suicide or a murder? Clyde has an ex-wife who claims that it couldn't be suicide. Is she the murderer or could it be one of the Indian wannabes who inhabit a lodge down the road? Or could it be Alton Hosfield who has lot of...

The Kirkus review is pretty much on the mark. Jance can be an excellent writer, and Brady's a great character, but the feeling one gets from this book is that Jance had to meet a deadline and just cranked another one out. "Don't forget to throw in the serial killer, and focus on the macabre and grisly aspects of the killings and burials. Throw in some local...

Or could it be Alton Hosfield who has lot of animosity towards his neighbors and the federal government? Joanna works tirelessly to uncover the true culprit. Her daughter, Jenny, is on a trip with her grandparents so Joanna has more time to devote to law enforcement and to a new romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mystery, great setting, great characters!, January 23, 1999
By A Customer
I stumbled across the Joanna Brady series with Desert Heat, and enjoyed the southern Arizona setting and the very real characters. I've since enjoyed following Joanna, her family and friends through the series of novels. Rattlesnake Crossing has really developed the relationship between Joanna and Butch - I can hardly wait till August for the next novel to be released to find out how Butch's moving to Bisbee will affect them!

A good deal of the action in Rattlesnake Crossing takes place on the Pomerene Road north of Benson, and towards Redington...I was excited to read about the San Pedro Valley, the flora and fauna, and the surrounding nearly-ghost-towns, since we are planning a vacation to the area. In fact, I can hardly wait to visit Bisbee to see the real Copper Queen Hotel, and to check to see if the building housing Joanna's office really exists!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story., May 12, 1999

When I first read the Kirkus review, I delayed reading the book. However, I did finally read it and I couldn't put it down. I think Ms. Jance endows her character with compassion and makes her a real person. Real police investigation is not the exciting stuff that is portrayed in some of the tough guy/gal novels. Joanna Brady is more like a real person with a real life. I enjoyed this book very much and am eagerly awaiting the next one in the series. I personally like a little romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars No fluff. Just very good, August 9, 2006
My first Brady novel. Actually my first read by this author. It starts quickly and grabs your attention quickly. The story is interwoven nicely and just keeps going at a good pace without a lot of wasted words. It's led me to read more of Ms. Jance's work

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Mystery, November 21, 2003
By A Customer
I recently discovered the Joanna Brady series and have been happily reading along and enjoying the character of a woman sheriff in a small town. At first, I thought that her wearing a suit and heels to work was ridiculous but I realized that she probably had to be conservative since she was the first woman sheriff in the region. I also enjoy the Arizona setting and Jance's deft interweaving of family, friends, and mystery.

I wasn't nuts about the serial killer plot in this book -- I identified this person the moment they made an appearance in the book by the "profile" similar to many on TV cop shows and movies. However, I suppose serial killers are everywhere.

Overall, the Joanna Brady series keeps my interest and I've read about nine books so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, December 28, 1998

I couldn't put this book down long before picking it back up. The plot turned on you and the ending came as quite a surprise. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the Joanna Brady mysteries, stumbling unto them during a brief time of unemployment and excessive reading. Her other series, with J.P. Beaumont, is just as good. Actually, I like "Beau" better but Joanna is really great herself.

J A Jance has done it again. Rattlesnake Crossing is an excellent addition to the previous Joanna Brady mysteries. Set in a large county in Arizona shots rings out in the night and JoAnna is off again trying to save the citizens of Cochise County from murder. Fans of the Joanna Brady should also check out JA Jance's other series JP Beaumont of Seattle. I recommend both series to mystery fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another comfortable Jance mystery, December 29, 2001
By
Paul Skinner (Manassas, Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
Every time I read J.A. Jance, I get this comfortable feeling, like I live in Arizona (though it is one of the few states I've never visited). Sheriff Brady must find a serial killer who scalps the victims as part of his/her trademark. Could the killer be part of the new Apache dude ranch? Or could it be a disgruntled rancher tired of government regulation? The story gets complicated and even fairly kinky as we discover some of the deepest darkest secrets of the Cochise county citizens. You will not be dissappointed with this book.

It is "my bad" that I haven't caught up with J.A. Jance before now. Tucson is my second home and this author had not crossed my radar screen until my wife gave me this book for my birthday. I am ordering all the sequels as this is very good writing and needs to be supported. It talks to you as you read it so if you are into this genre, go for it. It is "really good stuff."
