If there were a theme song that epically describes and captures the message in author Dr. Greg Bourgond's book "A Rattling of Sabers", I would have to choose Casting Crowns' "Until the Whole World Hears" for one simple fact: the chorus repeats the powerful phrase "Ready yourself....Ready yourself." Greg sounds a clarion call early on in the book to wake up men, chose sides, and gird themselves for the battles that WILL come.
Few of us have experienced the unnerving sound of rattling sabers. To help illustrate go to your kitchen drawer, pull out two steak knives, rub and bang the blades together over and over, and then multiply by thousands to draw this picture in your mind. In the practice of warfare rattling sabers, the pounding of drums, or war cries were common tools used to dishearten your opponent. Nowadays, we are slightly more civilized, but this metaphor provides vivid and memorable imagery that mirrors reality.
In Dr Greg Bourgond's book, he expands on this idea by showing readers, mainly men, that our enemy is rattling his sabers. And the sound is becoming increasing louder. Ultimately, the struggle is-and always has been-between good and evil. Our enemy attempts to sow seeds of doubt and fear into lives, but with the spiritual armor of God we can live victoriously.
This book is not for the casual Christian man who wants to be a touch better in his walk with God by following five steps to success. Rather, it is a book that challenges you to become a man after God's own heart; it involves a lifestyle change, training, inner transformation, and a radical rethinking of how you approach life. Not all will be successful at this and he makes no apologies for saying so.
Greg has thrown down the gauntlet and what he has to say is really no different than the charge Christ gives everyone, as the book consistently points to Scripture and its practical application. Sides have to be chosen. There is no "neither-nor"; there is only "either-or" and the gulf is ever widening.
Strength and Honor. You will see those very words often. And once again, this book is not for the casual Christian.

If your life is perfect don't waste your time reading this book. This book is for those of us who realize our lives fall short. A Rattling of Sabers is the cure for living an inconsistent, dishonoring, empty and broken lives.

The author unlocks the hidden key about how to have lasting change in your life. Do not read any more behavior modification "how to" books that never work long-term. A Rattling of Sabers is about how God can change the very core of who we are. I have heard it said that "we really can't change who we are" and we have ALL failed trying to do so. A Rattling of Sabers unlocks the key to lasting transformational change. I believe this is an important book in our culture that has lost its sense of values.

Read it...but be prepared for becoming a changed person. It hurts a little, but more than worth it!

I cannot over emphasize how valuable it has been to understand the concepts explained in A Rattling of Sabers, in the pursuit to become a man after God's own heart. Few men have a greater depth of understanding than Greg Bourgond, not only of how deeply-rooted values such as honor, legacy, and courage resonate with how God has wired the hearts of men, but also of the inner-workings of how all that can be externally perceived is ultimately rooted in the heart. This book offers valuable tools to engage on the battlefield, renew one's mind, and find victory that endures to make a lasting impact on a watching world.

Let go of your presumptions grab hold of this book with a group men and and get ready for a life changing spiritual experience.

I've known Greg for 15 years. I know his heart for men and for helping them finish well. This book is based on the Word of God and is for men who are serious enough to open their lives to close inspection and have a willingness to change. This is not a book you read and put aside. It is best read with a small group of like-minded men, men who believe life is a series of battles and not a game we decide to play. Expect to be challenged, educated, encouraged and inspired to become the man God created you to be.

Clear, crisp, concise. Implement the guidance in this book and you will finish well.
