First of all - don't be misled this CD is a FULL album. It is full of highly produced Bhangra dance music produced in Mumbai. Daler Mehndi is currently recording in London with The Wolfmen but this is his more typical fare. His "Tunak Tunak Tun" song and video have already become legendary. This is more of the same.....I have no idea what the words mean but Daler Mehndi's voice weaves so effeorlesslly above the pounding tracks, the whole experience borders on the hypnotic. While I was immediately impressed by Daler Mehndi when I heard and saw his videos, I hesitated before buying anything by him because I am not that fond of listening to dance music. I needn't have worried, though, because this recording is far more than just a dance album. Songs move to both faster and slower grooves, the harmonies are varied, and the instrumentation has occasional surprises--not only thick synthesizers but also stabs of rock and acoustic guitar and bright 80s pop keyboards. In a way, the careful attention to sound reminds me of nothing so much as classic Prince (and, think what you may of His Purple Weirdness, the man knows how to make records).

Above it all, though, Mehndi's voice is simply spectacular: melodic, powerful, sometimes subtle and sometimes almost over the top. I cannot judge the lyrics, which I don't understand, and I do wish I could hear him do some of the more "classical" and religious music I've heard from him on videos, but this recording is just fine. I'm glad I took a chance on buying it.
