4.0 out of 5 stars Who Needs Chords When You've Got Noise?, March 14, 2007
This review is from: Raus Aus Stavanger (Audio CD)
Every post-punk band worth its superiority complex has at least one improv-noise jam. You know the kind: no regular tempo, frantic flailing on the guitar, spastic bass blurbs, patternless drum crashes, all thrown together on the spot. Sometimes they scream without words. Moha came up with ten of those and skipped the rest of the songwriting.

Usually I'd want to chuck a CD like this against a wall; with endeavors like these, it's easy to sound lazy and self-indulgent. But Moha pulls off something tricky. Each track sounds unique, and yet all the tracks are of a piece. The band sticks to guitar, drums, and some kind of modulation system (no vocals), and the consistent instrumentation helps give the album a stable character. Each track is less a composition than an exercise in mood, and while each mood is different, they work when taken as a whole.

You wouldn't put this on to sing along to. It won't make you cry. I'd recommend it for those of you who like both Sonic Youth and jazz. Use this record as the soundtrack to a slapstick movie you direct.
