He began his career as a sportswriter before embarking on a career in public relations in common education (K-12) and higher education. His writing has earned awards from the Associated Press, the Texas School Public Relations Association, and the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association. Burton has authored five Texana-related books on such topics as sports, music and celebrities.
