Beautifully crafted performances,

This review is from: Ravel, Tailleferre, Milhaud: String Quartets (Audio CD)
I've never come across such a fine performance of Ravel's chamber music masterwork for some time. Leipziger String Quartet gives beautifully crafted and thoughtful rendition of the string quartet. Every detail is carefully brought out while overall coherence of the work is captured firmly. Each instrument is very expressive, yet perfectly balanced as an ensemble. The last movement is a bit too contrived and austere for my taste.
Milaud's String Quartet No.4 is a wonderfully original work and played brilliantly. My only complaint is Germaine Tailleferre's rather unremarkable string quartet, which lasts only 9'30 minutes and sounds like a diluted mixture of Ravel and Faure's music. Why didn't they choose Debussy's string quartet instead!! |
