Product Description

Jamaican born Bob Marley, at the youg age of 20, became the singing front man of a new music group called The Wailers. About six years later United States and the rest of the world were introduced to a new form of Jamaican music called Reggae, by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

In Jamaica, Reggae was not new. Rooted from the early 20th century simple island music known as Mento, jazz and rock influences in the 1940s and 1950s helped shape a new form of Caribbean sound. Bob Marley took this music and added lyrics that stimulated consciousness while promoting pleasure. In a world struggling to breathe free, the music could no longer be merely contained in Jamaica.

Through turbulent political times of the 1960s amidst struggles of Jamaican poor, Marley sang songs of hope and freedom. Such songs eased the hearts and souls of American wives and mothers suffering over the possible loss of husbands and sons fighting in southeast Asia. By the 1970's, Bob Marley and the Wailers had become part of the mainstream music scene.

Although there had survived through two failed assasination attempts against him, Marley had succumbed to cancer in 1981, at age 36. By then, the appeal of Reggae rhythms and the happy, hopeful songs have spread into world culture where it remains as a resilient and expanding art form today.

Through his short life, Bob Marley's legacy is to the many sons and daughters who continue to recreate Reggae into a flourishing music form and for all those who grow to appreciate it. Weight - 0.080lbs
