Book Description

January 28, 2011
For one with the ravenmark, there is no balance.

Connor Mac Niall has everything he wants. As the best freelance man-at-arms in the known world, his reputation brings him jobs that provide adventure, women, and money in abundance.

But Connor has a secret: He’s ravenmarked. The avenging spirit of the earth, known as the Morrag, has chosen him to be her angel of death–to kill those she wants killed. Connor has run from her call half his life, and working as a freelance helps him keep the need to kill quelled.

When Connor reluctantly agrees to escort a fleeing royal heir to safety, he has no idea that the journey will bring him face to face with the Morrag–and require that he choose between destiny and freedom. He finds himself confronted with old regrets and new choices. On one side pursued by a sorcerer who wants him dead and on the other side tempted by the Morrag to submit his will to hers, Connor unwittingly escorts his charge right into the path of greatest danger for them both. He faces a choice: Submit his will to the Morrag’s control, or let the royal heir die.

Set against a backdrop of romance, political instability, and magic, Ravenmarked is the first in a five-book epic fantasy series titled The Taurin Chronicles.

Taura is in unrest, especially since the new king, Braedan, recently usurped the throne. The religious women, the sayas, are in danger and Connor has been given the task of transporting one saya and true heir to the throne, Mairead, to safety.

Connor must not only fight off those that wish to apprehend Mairead, he must continually fight himself. He is ravenmarked by the violent earth spirit, the Morrag. He finds his control slipping, especially around the oddly alluring Mairead. Can he keep them both safe?

Ravenmarked is everything lovers of epic fantasy crave! Intriguing, weaving plot lines? - check. Many multi-dimensional characters? - check. A romantic undertone? - check. A completely encompassing new world? - check.

I adored the character-centric plot where the characters themselves tell the story instead of the book being plot heavy with characters that act more like pawns (an issue with many fantasy novels). Most interesting, every character is compelling and almost all have depth. Also, each character has hidden traits, some known and others unknown by the characters themselves, which adds complexity to the story. Some characters are initially thought of as bad, but later turn into good guys. Some of the characters seem sickly sweet at the beginning, but become harsher and worldlier as the story progresses.

The plot itself is a bit difficult to understand at first mainly because of the fantasy world. Do not be dismayed because eventually everything will click into place and you won't be able to put the book down! There are two major plotlines that do eventually intersect at the end that set up the next in this epic series. Unfortunately, the story does not resolve much by the end, but then again, this is the first in a five-book series.

Ravenmarked is excellent! As I read, I kept comparing this book to Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series especially concerning the way the characters are written and the hint of romance that is dabbled throughout. This beginning story stands apart from others because of the characters since it is rare that so many characters grow in one story. Sadly, we have to wait until next year for the next installment. Argh! I want it now.

If you're a fan of character centered epic fantasy with a touch of romance, Ravenmarked is not to be missed!

There is a rumor about indie writers, and it goes something like this: Indie writers do not have a contract because their works are crap.

Not so with Ravenmarked. This first installment in a five-book series captured me from the first page. I've always had a love for Celtic-themed fantasy, and it is obvious that the research was done well and the plot points were developed with precision.

Without giving away the plot, let me say this: It's not what you think. What starts out as a simple rescue ends up being more. A king who seems evil develops a soft side. A queen with a stubborn streak eventually loses it to one far beneath her. None of the characters act as they should, and that is why I loved it: Multi-complex characters are rare, and Amy Rose Davis has revived them in this first book of an exciting, hair-raising, and heartrending series.

Revealing a whole new fantasy world is a remarkable feat that Amy does with gentle, yet enticing words and deep conversational passages. (This is NOT a book that will makes readers want to skip to the next conversation!) While describing Taura, she deftly intertwines it with history and dialog in a way that welcomes readers to absorb every word.

Ravenmarked has well-defined characters who draw you their story. Amy lets her characters get themselves mired in their troubles, rescue each other, extend mercy where none is deserved, and redeem themselves. Well...not all of them redeem themselves, but to find out you'll just have to read it!

I am eagerly awaiting the next four! I wish Amy continued success in her writing pursuits, but I have to say that she should hurry up in those writing pursuits because I am on pins and needles here...
