Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ravenna in Late Antiquity," by Deborah Mauskopf Deliyannis, is both a narrative history of the city's ruling elites and a survey of its architectural and artistic treasures. ...[treasures] worth pausing over. The illustrations and diagrams in Ravenna in Late Antiquity add to our understanding of the city's history and iconography-and can even serve as a kind of guidebook to an ambitious tourist" --Wall Street Journal

"...Deliyannis has provided an exceptional resource. Her book is a mine of information; it is functionally laid out, remarkably complete, and often points the scholar to interesting, unresolved questions. The book will become an essential resource for all those interested in the history, art, and architecture of Ravenna in late antiquity." --Catholic Historical Review

I can't add much to the product description, other than to say that the author has done a fine job of surveying our state of knowledge about the history of Ravenna up to Byzantine times. Since there are few literary sources, she necessarily devotes a great deal of space to the surviving monuments. The many illustrations are very helpful, and there are 15 color plates, but this is a book for the library, not the coffee-table. About a third of the volume is devoted to notes and other scholarly apparatus.

Note that this book entirely supplants the 1913 Ravenna: A Study by Edward Hutton.

I visited Ravenna last summer and I bought this book to better understand the city's history. I was not disappointed. There were a plethora of bureaucrats working under different kings who were instrumental in paying for and preserving the frescoes of Ravena. From imperial decrees we know that Ravenna housed a vast bureaucracy (with accountants, registrars, secretaries, clerks and notaries) and that its rulers left behind "marvelous" palaces, theaters, aqueducts and a mint, but none of these structures is in evidence today. That was probably the most surprising fact since imperial buildings no longer exist today. They were destroyed by the Germanic tribes after the 7th century. Since imperial power waned and the church took over the administrative duties of kings and queens, they chanelled precious resources in preserving ancient churches and imperial grounds which survived from fifth century. The illustrations of frescoes are faithfully reproduced. By reading this book, I was able to step inside back to the fifth century, a time that still exist is small fragments.

I wish that Deliyannis' book had been available when I vacationed in Ravenna last year. After reading it, I want to return.
