First, the coffee. It's perfectly fine, but nothing near the gift from heaven other reviewers here will have you believe. It's a touch acidic to my stomach, certainly does seem to have a kick to it and is otherwise a decent cup to wake up to.

[SEE EDIT BELOW--Second, the fraud. I won't buy any Raven's Brew again because I strongly suspect that fraudulent reviews are being posted on Amazon. Multiple reviews on the same day, reviewers who are strangely eloquent about coffee and reviewers who apparently only review Raven's Brew coffee and NOTHING ELSE. Really?

Very sad.]

EDIT: I've been informed that Raven's Brew solicited reviews (either good or bad) via their Facebook page. While I'd be surprised any Facebook fans of Raven's Brew would write bad reviews, I'll give them a pass. Just be aware of this fact when reading their reviews on Amazon.

Ever since my wife bought some whole-bean Raven's Brew Deadman's Reach a few years ago from a specialty shop in NYC I've been hooked on all their roasts and varieties. I've been buying Raven's Brew coffees through their website for years now, and although it's not cheap (especially with shipping from the west coast) it's well worth the price. Leave your Starblech's behind: Deadman's Reach is easily the best coffee I've ever had - smooth, silky, and full-bodied. A French-pressed cup (or two) in the morning starts any day off right. Thirsty now...off to grind some beans and make some Deadman's Reach!

Coffee is like wine or beer folks. Nobody likes everything and everybody leans towards a certain variety as their personal favorite. That said, if your the guy or gal who ever believed "the best part of waking up, is foldgers in your cup", Dead Man's Reach is not for you. If your a Starbucks person who prefers to get their jolt of caffeine from a mild and soothing breakfast blend, Dead Man's Reach is probably going to be a little much for your pallet. But if your the type who thinks that truckers are a bunch of pansies who manage to survive off watered down girly cups of coffee, then Dead Man's Reach might be the brew for you. Normally the darker the roast you buy, the less caffeine you get. Not so with this black ichor of artificially created life. Don't be mislead by other reviews that say it doesn't pack the punch of other beans. It sneaks up on you, it doesn't kick you in the face. Five minutes after your first cup and you feel like a new person. The flavor profile is what keeps fans of this roast coming back for more like its a rare drug though, you'll find the scent, alone after you grind the beans, enraptures your mind with anticipation. The first sip fills the mind dark potential, like a storm getting read to break loose. The dark earthy flavor brings to mind the deep woods and black soil. If the Brothers Grimm or the Norse gods were to sponsor a cup of coffee, this would be that cup. You can't see though a cup of Dead Man's Reach. Sooth sayers tell the future by gazing into it endless murky depths. They say the world was born from potential that was held in complete darkness; bring home some of this roast and experience a taste of that potential in a cup.

I originally fell in love with both the Wicked Wolf and Bruin blends, but I have been let down by this as well as the Resurrection blend. It is rather light for a dark roast, tasting much lighter than an everyday Dunkin' Donuts Dark blend, nearing a medium roast.

The coffee does have a nice even roast, and a bit of oil coating the beans. Nearly perfect for a medium roast blend, which this is not.

The flavor is not offensive nor amazing. It is coffee and nothing more. I would be hard pressed to discern this from any other run of the mill medium roast.

With my last couple of experiences I will not be purchasing Raven's Brew again.

This dark roast blend makes an awesome cup of coffee that will get you ready to face the day or an outstanding espresso that even Scorsese or Cornholio would envy. This stimulating brew is equivalent to a fine wine and has a robust flavor with a whisper of sweetness. Makes a wonderful gift or sip and savor it yourself. A little more expensive than store bought coffee but you're worth it aren't you? You WILL NOT be disappointed.

This dark rich coffee is delicious! and the best part is...NO BITTERNESS! I fell in love with this coffee the first time I ever tried it! I loved this coffee so much I even gave some to my dad who is quite a coffee fiend as well, and now he doesn't want anything but this coffee. In a nut shell, if you haven't tried it, you really should. If you have, you know what I'm talking about! :)

I was expecting a much better coffee. I am giving it 1 star because it does taste ok and the vacuum pack kept the beans fresh.

In my opinion, this coffee is, at best, a mild-flavored medium roast. There is nothing wrong with the taste, but there is nothing special about this coffee to justify its boutique pricing. I also found myself having to use an awfully lot of coffee to get a cup that was tasty. In no way does this coffee resemble other dark roasts that I have purchased, either in terms of the color of the grind, the heaviness of its body, etc.

This is an overpriced, under-flavored coffee with no real kick and no real reason to order again. I am suspicious of all of the glowing reviews this coffee has garnered already.

I was given this as a gift, and was excited to give it a try. I made it the way I make all roasts, five scoops in the french press. Oh wow. That was a bad idea. Imagine licking an old firepit. It just tasted burnt and smoky. The next day I scaled it down to four scoops. The result was a drinkable, creamy batch of coffee. Still, it tasted and smelled like burnt wood. I would not recommend this to anybody. It's not the worst coffee I've had, but I would have been upset if I had spent money on it.

The advertising suggests that this is something really special. Actually this coffee is disappointing. I expected a srong coffee with lots of oomph and this did not come close. I had to add espresso beans to it in order to get it perked up to my specifications.

I'm saddened to see accusations of fake reviews and a wave of negative reviews for Deadman's Reach. I can only assume this is competitors trying to regain some ground.

This is unfortunate, because I try new products based largely on amazon reviews, and would never have taken a chance on this fantastic coffee had the latest reviews been posted at the time I was searching.

That said, I have no affiliation with Ravens Brew. Suggesting that this review is illegitimate, or coerced is insulting and a blow to the legitimacy of the Amazon Review program entirely.

DR really is the best coffee I've ever tried. I'm not a fan of extreme dark roasts, or extreme lite ones. To me, this is the perfect roast. It's rich, chocolaty, and complex; all without the slightest hint of bitterness. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's bitter coffee.

Here's how I make it:

+ using a normal Mr Coffee blade grinder: http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-IDS57-4-Grinder-Black/dp/B00005OTXM/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1329666521&sr=8-20
+ Fill beans to top of grinder chamber with a small bluge over the horizontal. Reduces to ~3/4cu when ground.
+ hold grind button for 11 seconds. No shaking, tapping, bumping, etc needed
+ prepare in Bunn auto-drip office type coffee maker using 64oz of water

There's nothing bad I can say about Deadman's Reach. Very highly recommended - 100% legitimate review - ignore the negative (probably fake in my opinion) reviews and try this coffee - you won't regret it.

[Update 5/30/13] - I'm very disturbed to see accusations of false reviews and a wave of negative reviews dragging the reputation of this remarkable coffee down.
