5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written by a true writer!
I was very happy with this book. I do not usually like love stories, however, the writer took careful steps to research some fascinating history. I loved that there were stories from the time opium was smuggled into the country. I also liked the fact that Darius is not just a lover, but has mezmorized Madeline, so far into love that she does not know her own mind...

I enjoyed reading this book and honestly cannot wait for the other two books to come out in this trilogy. However, there are two things in this story that bothered me immensely - enough to earn only three stars.

-1 star: The grammatical errors throughout the story were just too annoying to ignore. Floating quotation marks, incorrect pronoun usage, and lack of proofing for sentence syntax. For any author, his/her first book should be carefully proofed before it is released to the public. How one writes is a reflection of the care they took while writing it.

-1 star: The excessive use of aggressive behavior from the male lead, Darius, toward his love, Madeline. The author did a great job portraying Darius' struggle with his demonic side, and I was quite impressed with how well Jordan did showing how he had to prevent anyone from finding out about his life. However, I truly felt that Darius did not need to show his turmoil with his inner demon by slapping Madeline around or threatening & controlling her. That is not a healthy relationship, and I think that Jordan could have depicted Darius' struggle without the use of aggression and verbal/physical abuse on Madeline, his love. His slapping her in the face, scratching her with his fingernails on her cheek, and shutting her up in a coffin as she struggles for air and claws at the coffin until her fingers bleed are all simply abusive and not really very loving at all.

I'm no prude and have read several vampire books by J.R. Ward, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Keri Arthur, etc... And, to these authors' credits, they were able to successfully portray their demons' inner struggles without the use of abuse on their loved ones. Fiction is escape for readers - why not make the male lead somewhat redeemable in character despite their tragic flaws in nature?

I hope Jordan considers veering away from the male lead using physical and verbal abuse on their love interest in future stories. It is just a big turn-off to have some male bullying his love around - we have too many of those unfortunate males in our current society today to have our fantasy male leads do such things to their female loves.

This is just my opinion. Great story, very engaging. However, the use of violence against the female lead was just unnecessary, and the grammar/syntax needs to be seriously reviewed before publishing.

I was very happy with this book. I do not usually like love stories, however, the writer took careful steps to research some fascinating history. I loved that there were stories from the time opium was smuggled into the country. I also liked the fact that Darius is not just a lover, but has mezmorized Madeline, so far into love that she does not know her own mind anymore. She has succumbed to his charms and I cannot wait to see if she becomes less dependent upon him, or will she keep being a slave to his love. This book was VERY easy to read, and I would suggest it to anyone. Great job

Ravens Deep is an exceptional book...not your typical vampire book. It's deep and dark but the romance is wonderful.

I really liked this story. It moves at a brisk pace, is easy to read and well written. Weaving between country romance and Somerset scenery to gothic horror and London's labyrinth of underground passages. This is definitely a story about love and obsession, but with a very dark side to it. The main character - Madeline is well thought-out and developed as she pursues and is in turn pursued, by the very intriguing Darius - whom I am sure would make a great movie character.
The whole thing builds to a great ending, heart pounding stuff with many twists and turns on the way. I really hope there will be more from this author and I am sure there is room here for a sequel and I am dying to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, June 16, 2008

I am always looking out for new and different books. This one fits in well, it is a story that excites the reader, a 'page turner'. It is the story of a young girl meeting with her long lost ancestors, She falls in love in an imaginary way, it delves into the past with a interesting turn of events. Totally unexpected story which made me not want to put it down.
I hope Ms Jordan has more in store for us, as I believe the ending has left it open for more. Well done.

3.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing book but frustrating heroine, June 5, 2010

I did like this book, I loved the interactions between Darius and Madeline in the beginning of the book and I really believed their feelings for each other, BUT the heroine is one that I can't stand, she takes stupid and very selfish actions when it is obvious what the results will be... I was a bit put off about how crazily obsessed she becomes with Darius, yes he loves her also but her obsession was more apparent specifically because the book was mostly written in her point of view. Imagine reading a book that is basically taking place through the eyes of a heroine you can't stand.. Darius was at first a very charming and noble hero but he changes and you see him for the cold man he is and towards the end the charming side of him is never resurrected, not that I am complaining, the author obviously wanted to show his dark side,

the heroine is just so selfish in her actions, I can't forgive her-she knows what the hero is and wants to know more and then complains about why he is that way, she is supposed to represent light in their relationship but she was no angel, what she would actually do out of her obsession for the hero made that clear when she made the hero do something which he would always regret and never wanted to do...I am still interested in their story and contemplating whether to read the sequel but I think it focuses mostly on Madeline and she is separated from the Darius... I can tell it will probably be frustrating and painful but the rapid ending of this book leaves you with such a compulsion to read the second that I almost regret reading it in the first place, but I really want to know more about what happens so it can't be helped
