BEWARE this game is a Double-Layer Disc and might not work on all consoles
on June 28, 2012
I have updated this review several times. the original title was "doesn't work". I have left all of my original posts here so you can see what I went through and understand the problem better. My final conclusion is at the end (last paragraph) if you're in a hurry, go there directly, it explains something you might not know (took me a while to figure it out and did only with help from others)it also explains the 1 star ratings/reviews on this page and might save you some trouble, so next is my first review and some updates I made and then my conclusion. (P.d.: I hope this will be helpful and sorry for my bad english, this is my third language and I'm still learning, I hope you understand).
*edit* I added a third update today, this is not the update I was talking about on my previous paragraph since I wrote it a long time ago.
I don't know if it's because this is a 3 in 1 compilation and the wii can't handle that well or what, but my wii won't play this disc. It will play every other game I own including very old ones but not this one. I've done everything, followed the instruction manual of the wii (which doesn't say much anyway) and nothing. I know it's not my wii's lens since it reads everythings else. I was comparing the disc to my other games' and noticed the bottom un-printed part of the disk is slightly darker. I don't know what's going on. I guess I'll just return the game or lose my money. I'm so sad, it sounded like a great deal to have the 3 games in one for such a low price. I was so excited :( I have read one review saying the same thing but since others didn't seem to the have the problem I thought I would get lucky...I didn't.
I took the disc to a video game store and they tried it on another wii console. surprise, surprise, the game did work there...my guess is the game is not compatible with old models of the wii (I bought my wii around 2006 when it first came out)...I say this because I have tried many different wii titles on my (old) wii console and they do work perfectly. I still like my old wii better since it can play gamecube games and is compatible with gamecube accesories (something new models can't do). I guess I'll just save the game for when I have a wii U maybe then it will work. The funny thing is though some of my games are quite new like skyward sword so maybe it only happens with *some* new games?
UPDATE 2! (CONCLUSION)
In case you guys are still interested, I've done some research on the internet and asked some friends and it turns out, apparently the issue is the fact that this is a "double-layer" disc...double-layer discs can hold more information (makes sense considering this one has 3 games in only one disc) but they are a bit harder to read for the lens. Basically what happens is the lens might be a bit dirty or damaged but it can still work well enough to read normal single-layered discs perfectly (because the laser only has to go through one layer of disc)...that's why it reads almost every game perfectly...but discs that require some extra performance don't work so well or just don't work at all. In which case you can either change the wii lens, change the whole optical drive (more expensive but easier and less dangerous for the console to do, which is an upgrade I'll probably make in the future) or just try to clean the lens, preferably with the official nintendo wii lens cleaning kit...or you can send the wii for a professional cleaning which nintendo does for free - or so I have read- if the wii is still under warranty. This problem occurs a lot with games like super smash brothers brawl and some metroid games which are also double-layered. The newer the wii console the less likely this is to happen.
*edit* UPDATE 3. A lot of time later, and after adquiring some other games which turned out to also be dual-layered (xenoblade chronicles, pandora's tower), I finally decided to give the "wii lens cleaning kit" a try. In my case, it worked and my wii is finally reading this game (raving rabbids collection)...so around a year later, I'll finally be able to play it. I also got a wii U about one month ago, if you plan on getting one, you should know the wii U doesn't have this problem with dual-layer discs (nor do newer versions of the wii, like the black and red wiis that are used honrizontally, these versions of the wii are not compatible with gamecube games and accessories though).
