Thank you, CAalmonds.com - you GET it! Americans are tired of things being soaked in DDT, boiled in chlorine and zapped with radiation just to make the USDA happy. This company has done its research and stays away from toxic chemicals and damaging radiation while still keeping the gummint boys off their backs - and what WE end up with is a nutritious, delicious health food that can be ordered over the net that will still actually SPROUT if you put it in water. I know - I sprouted several of these almonds after I received them. FYI - the process CAalmonds uses is a short hydrogen peroxide "steam bath." And - if they still sprout - they're good for your tummy, too! Good ON ya, CAalmonds!!!! The only problem is the whole darned 10 lb box is GONE.

I've ordered several batches of these almonds and they taste great, arrive on time and the packing is just fine. The problem is, they do not sprout. I've tried a few from each bag just to make sure and none of them have sprouted. That essentially means that the pasteurizing process is killing these almonds. This is not the grower's fault,but RAW does not mean RAW here (or anywhere in CA) and that is a shame.

I use them to make almond milk and want and need the nutrients that come from living foods. These have the taste, but they are not raw meaning the nutritional value drops enormously and that is a deal breaker for me.

Raw almonds in the US are NOT raw. They can be treated or gassed. I can't afford the truly raw ones from Spain and the like so had to compromise. Tried sprouting some and they rotted. Taste good but truly dead. Not the fault of the seller but the almond growers are suing to allow them to sell truly raw almonds again. Meanwhile, the raw almond industry had been gutted. Sigh. Unbelievable, they don't sprout.

March 2014 UPDATE.
I ordered another 10lbs and am pleased to report that I received a full 10lbs of nuts, sans bags. Actually I believe there were perhaps the equivalent of 3 nuts too much ... but I'm splitting hairs :) The quality is just as good as the last batch. Rating bumped to 5 stars.

Original August 2013 review:
The box arrived promptly and was well packaged. Boy are these tasty. Reading the informative comments give me confidence that in a fairly strict regulatory environment, these are likely the best you're going to get in the US. There is however, one interesting tidbit I realized.

I pre-portioned the almonds in ziploc bags for nut milk. I have my own system down for the optimal nut/water ratio. Expecting each 1 lb. bag to yield two half pound portions, I was surprised to find that there were on average .988 lbs of nuts in each bag. It doesn't seem like much but for every 10lbs, you're shorted about .1 lb. Then I realized that they weighed the nuts along with the bag - stupid me. It's not really a huge deal but (pulling out my geek card) it kind of messed with my anticipated calculations.

I have been a customer of CAlmonds for 3 years. (I never wrote a review for them before because usually I am too busy, and also there is enough reviews extolling their almonds already. But I am writing today, because of my most recent--superb--experience with their customer service.)

First, about almonds: I compared CAlmonds to Whole Foods market's bulk almonds and Azur Standard almonds (also from California, and also raw). CAlmonds are fresher (softer, less dry, and more flavourful) than WF's almonds; and they are very similar to Azur almonds in quality, but at a much better pricepoint. Also, as CAlmonds only processes nuts, I feel safe about my gluten sensitivities. Regarding sprouting: in my experience, it varies by the batch. I was unable to sprout almonds in my very first batch, but almonds in some of the subsequent batches did sprout. (The most recent batch that I have been able to sprout was ordered on May 2, 2014.) Regarding storing: I suggest freezer, especially if bought in bulk.

The highlights about the Customer Service: they respond within 24 hours, they are very clear and respectful in their communication, and if there is a problem, as I had recently, they resolve it to the highest of the customer's satisfaction. In my shopping experience, this is a rare and precious thing.

So by now, my husband and I tried their regular almonds and their walnuts, switched from buying individually packed bags to buying 10lb bags, and are now buying directly from their website (and I find it very convenient that it is linked to my amazon card). I hope they stay in and grow as a business for a long time, and I anticipate eating through many more bags of their wonderful nuts. Thank you, CAlmonds!

If these are from California. By law all CALIFORNIA almonds sold after 2007 must be pasteurized! I am not sure about almonds produced in the US outside California because I can not find any information.

If a food item is pasteurized it no longer a raw food!!!!

For a food to be labeled pasteurized it MUST be heated to reach a minimum temperature of 160 degrees or be processed using a toxic chemical wash with toxic fumigant propylene oxide (PPO)!! Personally, at least to me, a chemical wash is much worse than heat processing, but either kills pathogens AND ENZYMES!!

If it is heat pasteurized, the food is then tested to determine if pasteurization was successful. This test is a test for live enzymes. If there are live enzymes present, the pasteurization process failed and the food CAN NOT be labeled pasteurized!!!!

At 160 degrees ALL enzymes are dead!!!!

If the enzymes are dead, the food is no longer a RAW FOOD and no longer has the benefits of RAW FOOD!!!

Live enzymes are ONE of the main reasons why food is eaten RAW, because live enzymes are very beneficial to the body!!!

If a food has been pasteurized, the enzymes are dead and no matter how much the California almond industry tries to twist the definition of a RAW FOOD to deceive the public and put more $$$$ in their bank accounts, pasteurized almonds are no longer RAW and no longer have the benefits of a RAW food!!!

If they are chemically pasteurized and you eat them, you are putting toxic chemicals into your body. Toxic chemicals remain in your body forever and continue to build up in your body. Toxic Chemicals are a leading cause of cancer!! The more of them you eat, the more toxic chemicals build up in your body.
