I learned about the excellence of this disc from Robert Cray, who listed it in his top five blues albums. It may well be the best disc of Johnny Taylor's Stax period-- even if it doesn't include his very best Stax song, "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby."

Like Cray's material, "Raw Blues" straddles the Blues - Soul gap, so you have sorrowful blues intensity combined with the more sophisticated brass arrangements of soul. This disc is up there with the classic Hayes-Porter songs that you find with Mable John and Ruby Johnson, during their Stax periods. A must-have for all fans of "deep" or "southern" soul.

The title says it all. This is blues, and it's raw. When you play it, you're hearing the heart of the late Johnny Taylor; one of the greatest Southern soul singers ever. You see, when the heart sings, it doesn't necessarily sing with a hit song in mind, nor will it always have that 'hook.' Indeed, most songs on this release simply resonate with a deep feelling that builds throughout the song into a crescendo of emotion. Witness the exquisite "Pardon Me Lady," a song that will no doubt be too slow in developing for most audiences today. The same thing can be said for "Hello Sundown."

This is not to say that there is no appeal to modern listeners. There lots, and the Memphis Horns have a lot to do with that, along with the thick production value and tight backing by Booker T and the MG's. "That Bone," and "You Can't Win With a Losing Hand" display some really nice blues grooves.

This is definitely not a museum piece, but along with the rest of Johnny's work, remains timeless.

I don't know what to say about this CD that others have not said. It is a must have, to add to your collection of Johnnie Taylor's music. It is clear why this CD is titled "Raw Blues". He spills his soul out in a rawness that is hard to describe. This CD is rightfully titled "Raw Blues". If you enjoy the blues, this is a must have.

I WAS VERY SADDENED TO HEAR OF JOHNNIE TAYLORS'DEATH AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE SINGER.HE IS ORIGINALLY FROM A SMALL TOWN CLOSE TO WHERE I'M FROM AND I'VE ENJOYED HIS MUSIC FOR MANY YEARS.HE WAS BORN IN CRAWFORDSVILLE,AR.,WHICH IS ONLY 15 MILES FROM MY HOME OF PARKIN. SO AS YOU CAN SEE,I'M NO STRANGER TO HIS MUSIC AND THIS ALBUM IS ONLY ONE OF MANY GREAT MASTERPIECES OF "MR. TAYLOR.EVEN WITH THE "SOUL STIRRERS" HE MADE YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU WERE WITH HIM.HE ALWAYS WILL BE "THE WHALER"
