Inspired talent !,

This review is from: Raw (Audio CD)
Gilson is, like all of us, the expression of all of his accumulated experiences. Perhaps, few of us can integrate these multi-faceted experiences with such cogency, that we seem, in fact, bigger than the possible sum of our histories. As I have known Gilson since his beginnings (I mean, from age zero!), I am truly qualified to speak on his accomplishments and talents, which are essentially surmised in his album RAW. He was always exceedingly talented, and displayed early signs of both technical virtuosity and inspiration. His love for a variety of musical styles was at first diffused, but after spending years studying, and in particular, with his experience at Berklee College of Music, Gilson emerged as a profoundly inspired contemporary Jazz pianist, carrying great influences and displaying an unusual and versatile style. This style, uniquely his, is well displayed in his album RAW, where he gracefully combines Jazz, and Latin rhythms, with his classical technique, and much charm in both compositions, and arrangements. PEDRA VERDE is an exciting track, with a fast samba displaying Gilson's group in a wonderful performance, filled with power and rhythms, featuring solos from various members of the band. JULIA is a beautiful song dedicated to Gilson's daughter, it has a gentle and expressive melody, in a medium tempo, and displaying emotions I know he felt when his daughter was born. TRISTE is a classic performed by an artist who is destined to become one. The arrangement is introduced and played with a Bill Evans' touch. Gilson greatly enriches this standard Bossa Nova tune throughout the performance. NANICA is Gilson's own composition in a Coltrane type of tune with a Bossa feel to it. AGUA DE BEBER shows Gilson's older influences, such as Zimbo Trio, with a great blend of Samba, Bossa, and Jazz. HERMETIANA #1 and #2 are complex pieces, albeit in different ways, requiring great intellectual focus and emotional direction--all inspired from the Brazilian master, Hermeto Pascoal. Gilson does a superb job holding the whole thing together with good taste and poignancy. CORCOVADO is a known Brazilian classic, which receives a new treatment. It is played maturely, and in a very sensual way. Finally, it is impossible for me to hide the pride I feel towards Gilson's life and accomplishments. He has blossom onto a mature, inspired, and sensitive artist, with true merits of his own. His dedication and honesty will lead to even greater results, for RAW is only a momentary step towards a wonderful artistic career. I know all of that, for Gilson has always been, and will always continue being blessed. Abe
