Editorial Reviews

Rare 1970 debut by British progressive rock band Raw Material. The album kicks off with three solid tracks, 'Time And Illusion,' - characterized by prominent vibraphone - 'I'd Be Delighted,' - excellent sax and flute playing - and 'Fighting Cock,' confirming the potential of the band, which they would go on to prove with their excellent follow up album Time Is. Miniature gatefold LP sleeve. Akarma. 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the review above!!!!!!!!!!!, March 24, 2003
This review is from: Raw Material (Audio CD)
No, he is correct that the first album is not as cliched a progressive rock album as the second (don't get me wrong, I love the second album), but it still has some very fine qualities......it is harder rocking than the second, very bass heavy with little saxaphone but much stronger guitar work....just listen to the extended workout at the end of Traveller Man. Melodically it is still good and really takes you back to the London underground scene as the 60's turned into the 70's. Both Raw Material albums are great, just very different from one another....if you buy one after the other expecting more of the same then you will probably be disappointed....just go in with an open mind and enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars good, January 1, 2010
This review is from: Raw Material (Audio CD)
HA! One guy loves this album and the other guy hates it. I was giving this three stars before I even look at the two other reviews, but now this even makes more sense.

This is not bad by any standard. Raw Material uses some progressive elements here--flute, sax, jazzy vibraphone--and works nice solos. Some of this music is based on hard rock/blues structures, not quite prog, but the soloing and the ambition make this proto-prog if not the genuine article.

The problem I find is that there are a lot of different song ideas here; they are all good but very disperate, and the album does not seem to head in any one direction. There is no center of gravity.

Still, worth a listen

I have both albums of Raw Material. The second album has strong progressive structure with strange and beatiful melodies. But the first is the bad parody on progressive music. Very bad ...
